Skip school for softball?

We have at least 5 girls that have school on June 6th. I have no problem missing the last day, but it appears I am the minority. Originally school was to end June 4th, but mother nature kicked our butts this winter and added some calamity days. Now what?

We are one of the few schools that did not get the packs to make up the snow days so now we have to go until June 4. We were supposed to get out at the end of may. I say lets skip lol.

I am a teacher and I say, Go play ball! At that time of the year no content will be missed, typically last day is a fun day anyway!

The last week of school there is no content being delivered that is meaningful.
It is mostly review, turning in text books, equipment, cleaning lockers etc.

Now missing will impact those working on attendance awards. I have had worse excuses given through out the year...:D

I am a teacher and DD has a calamity day makeup too that will impact a tourney. She will miss school that day. I however will not miss school and will miss her first games.

I was always taught that school comes first -that applies to all extracurricular activities. Tough decision , one that I’m glad I don’t have to make.

Are there any girls that have exams or tests on June 6th?

My dd's last day was 4/22 thanks to the PSEOP program. She took some tough classes but hey, she earned 32 college credits in the process. Unfortunately, she'll miss the Dayton Metro due to injury :( but will at least be there sitting next to Hitter23 stealing his food and cheering for her team.

We also have the same situation but we are skipping school. At that time of the school year its all recess and movies to fulfill the mandatory days in session since they are added days because of the snow.

Our last day is the 5th for non-seniors (my oldest is a senior and they told her they don't have to make the days up). BUT, that last day has finals under the original exam schedule. If children don't attend, it's an automatic 0. We haven't received the new exam schedule and hoping that the day will be an "off" day.

Our book return is a week before finals along with locker clean-outs.

I am sure there are many families who are not only dealing with softball type issues but also have made other travel/vacation plans for what was supposed to be the end of the school year. The schools are probably aware that there will be attendance issues those days. If the student is 8th grade or younger I say, just let the school know that you had previous travel plans so the student can turn in their books and so forth, then let them go play. For high school students who may have final exams. See if there is a way to take the final the day before, otherwise I would say that your finals need to come first and once you finish those sign out of school and go play ball.

Not a tough decision, go to school!!!

I used to feel this way - but with how much **** time kids have in school now (Movies, Activities, Parties etc.) I would have no problem pulling my DD out the last week of school -

Question to School Board: - Why don't you consolidate all of the REAL class time into one chunk of time - Start school in September after Labor day end it in May after Memorial Day and get rid of all the ****? -

Our district does something like 190 days of school out of that they may get 100 days of actual education.

my answer was based on a " last day of school " disclaimer meaning no test, no finals , just a " clean out your locker " type day. Of course academics come first -- if there is actual academic work that day . Heck I pay private tuition and my kid seems to come and go as she pleases ( Sr ) I like what some other poster said - could we skip the c r a p and just teach ? but oh you want to hear wailing like you have never heard -- insinuate teachers are paid decently and have a cush job .

Not a tough decision, good-bye school and hello tournament. Seriously though, what are they going to learn on the last day that is going to make them an A student. Typically the last couple of days are for movies, parties, field days, etc. the only exception would be if she is in high school and has a final exam that would impact her grade or GPA for college. Even if that was the case I'd tell the school our family is going out of town and we are leaving on the 6th so she needs to take her exam early.
