Hitting and Hitters Discussion Slap hitting question...

I understand in the art of slap hitting that contact with the ball must be made while, at least, one foot is still in contact with the front of the batters box on the cross over/run up...

but what is the rule for crossing over and taking a pitch? must the batter stay in the box or can momentum be allowed to carry her out of the box if she makes no effort on the pitch which is an obvious ball...?

I ask because my daughter is the only girl in her rec league who occasional slap hits. She usually does it once a game after she's had two AB's from the right side of the plate so she can work on it.
Last night we played in a rec league tournament and the 15 year old umpire and the catcher for the other team went nuts everytime she crossed over but pealed off when the pitch coming in was a ball. The other coach complained. the drunk parents complained...loudly (10U, tourney!) and I had to argue against all of them that it was legal for her to do this as long as she didn't contact the ball.

I've searched high and low on the net today to find the rule clarification but I can not find one outside of the 'can not make contact with the ball outside of the box'...I can't find anything stating anything about taking a pitch and falling out of the box...

the nastiness in which the other coach and the classless parents from team argued (openly caling my daughter a cheater) hurt her badly. As angry as I was I used the opportunity to talk to my daughter about growing thick skin and learning to play through jeering. ****s I had to give her that talk at the 10U rec ball level.

There is no problem unless she makes contact with the ball while a foot is in contact with the ground completely outside the batters box.

My dd does this regularly. Never called for anything. Never been a problem.

if she allows the ball to hit her before it can cross the plate by moving forward in the box this is a judgement call by the umpire and could be called a strike. If the opposing coach and "drunk" parents would give any kind of thought process, they would want the batter to be out of the box and make contact with the ball ,so an out could be called. The foot must be completely out of the box and in contact with the ground, contact with the ball, fair or foul the batter would be out.If the back foot is on the front line of the box and the front foot is in the air outside of the box when contact is made then this is legal. A rule book page number and article may help the opposing coach understand and help the parents with thier thought process on this rule.
