Slide-by fails once again

Watching the Georgia at Texas game right now and a Texas runner did a slide-by at home plate, trying to get her hand in there long after the rest of her body had passed home plate to the side.

And as usual, she was out when a straight slide would have found her easily safe.

Why do girls insist on doing slide-bys almost every time? Those are a special play, not a regular thing. They are to be used when you know you're going to be out and maybe some deceit will lure the defender away from home plate and you can reach your hand in there.

I have seen girls, including my own players, resort to this slide in a majority of their slides and it means you get to the base probably .5 to 1 full second later than you otherwise would.

I am banning the slide from my team next year unless the runner sees the fielder with the ball as she starts the slide. Otherwise, just slide straight in. If the defender is in front of the base without the ball and gets cleated, so be it, it's her own fault.

Wow. And in the next half-inning, there is an even worse slide-by. Georgia tries to steal second and the throw from the catcher pulls the shortstop to the right side of the bag. The Georgia girl slides in front of second base while the Texas shortstop leaps to catch the ball and swing her arm back to make the tag.

She tags the Georgia runner in the head for the out. At the time of the tag, the runner's legs were in front of second base and about two feet past second base. She was trying to reach her left hand to the base when she was tagged. Had she slid straight, the play would not have been remotely close.
