[Softball] Lehigh Carbon Wins District F Region XIX Championship, Advances To National Tournament

Vineland, NJ - After a 3 day wait, the Cougars softball team made the trip back to Cumberland County College on Tuesday afternoon for the deciding Game 3 of the Region XIX Championship Round against #2 seeded Rowan College at Gloucester County. The Cougars won Game 1 before the Roadrunners forced a Game 3 by taking Game 2 on Saturday. The Cougars defeated the Roadrunners in Game 3 by a final score of 4-3 to claim their second consecutive District F Region XIX Championship and advances to the National Tournament in Rochester, Minnesota.

The Roadrunners kicked off Game 3 by scoring a run in the bottom of the 1st to take an early 1-0 lead. It was a pitcher's duel throughout, as the score remained 1-0 through 3 innings. The Cougars took the lead in the 4th inning as they got runs from 2 RBI singles from freshman Hannah Hurd (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland High School) and sophomore Enjoli Espinosa (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic High School), as well as a sac fly from sophomore Mackenzie Guzy (Coplay, PA/Whitehall High School). The Cougars took a 3-1 lead in the 4th that would last until the bottom of the 6th when the Roadrunners fought back to tie the game at 3-3. However freshman Chelsea Morgan (Allentown, PA/Parkland High School) came up with the biggest hit of the Cougars' season as she led off the top of the 7th with a solo home run, her second of the year. That was enough for sophomore Shannon Gallagher (Whitehall, PA/Catasauqua High School) as she closed out the game in the circle as the Cougars won by a final score of 4-3.

Gallagher earned her NJCAA Division III leading 23rd win of the season in the circle as she threw all 7 innings, allowing 8 hits and 3 runs while striking out 4. She was named District F Region XIX Tournament MVP for her efforts on the mound and at the plate over the 3-game series.

The Cougars advance to their second consecutive appearance in the NJCAA Division III National Tournament held in Rochester, Minnesota. The National Tournament will be held from May 23-25. Stay tuned for details regarding the seeding and opponents.

Head Coach Eric Kutteroff remarked "it was a total team effort, top to bottom, everyone believed in one goal and we achieved it together". They're excited to get back to the National Tournament in Minnesota and continue their season.
