[Softball] No. 17 Vanguard Takes Two from Hawks

COSTA MESA, Calif. – The SDC softball team opened up conference play on Friday.


But the Lions were unwelcoming hosts as they swept the Hawks in the DH, 8-0 in Game 1 and completed the comeback for the 7-4 victory in Game 2.


The loss dropps the Hawks to 9-8 on the season and 0-2 in conference play. The Lions improved to an impressing 24-2 and 2-0 respectively.


In Game 1, Vanguard held the Hawks to just one hit in the five inning game. The Lions scored a run in the third, two in the fourth and five in the fifth.


Jordan Neal tallied the only hit for the Hawks, which came in the second inning. Vanessa Dwyer retired the next 11 batters.


In Game 2, the Hawks were able to get on the board in the first inning. Kayla Mack double to right center, scoring Victoria Harris.


SDC tallied two runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Neal singled through the left side scoring Harris. Bailey Romano then hit a sac fly to bring home Maritza Martinez.


The Lions erupted for six runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-3 lead heading into the sixth. Emily McMath singled home Romano but the rally fell short.


Five separate players registered hits. Harris led with two runs.


SDC will travel next week to William Jessup and Menlo in their next set of games.
