Following Fastpitchblue's other trivia question, one of the guys I work with heard this question on Car talk last week:

"What are the five ways that a "player" could reach first base without hitting the ball. "

First four are obvious and easy. The last one is debatable and should start some discussion.

Base on balls (BB), Hit by pitch (HP), Drop third strike , a courtesy runner, catcher interference.

Was I close?

I won't have the answer till Tuesday unless some listened to the show this a.m-they post it on the web. Your list matches my list except I said pinch runner instead of courtesy runner (semantics, maybe).

There's no such thing as "catcher's interference" in softball.

(It's "catcher's obstruction".)

A pinch runner and a courtesy runner are two separate things, covered by separate rules. One's a substitution, the other isn't. I suppose you could say that a "player" could reach first base either way, but I don't think you could say that a "batter" reaches base that way.

We covered "catcher's obstruction", but there is another kind of obstruction that can put the batter on first base, without hitting the ball.

With a runner on third and a squeeze play on, it is possible for ANY fielder (not just the catcher) to obstruct the batter, either by preventing her from hitting the ball, or by touching the batter's person or bat. So, the batter could be obstructed by the third or first baseman charging in to play on the runner.

That would not be catcher's obstruction- it's just plain old obstruction, though only in a special set of circumstances. I would have to say that this is an exceedingly rare call, but it is a possible call, one covered by it's own specific rule in the rule book.

If that's not on the original list...then they need to add one more to the list!

I'm assuming the word Player, applies to the player (Batter) that is Batting?

1. Hit

2. Walk

3. Hit by Pitch

4. Fielder's Choice

5. Reached Base on Error

6. Dropped Third Strike

7. Catcher's Obstruction (hindering the batter while in the batter's box)

8. Fielder's Obstruction (hindering the batter while he is running to first base)

9. Batter-runner is out at 1st but the 1st Base Umpire commits a monumental
boo-boo and calls the runner safe!

Did I miss any Bretman?

There's nothing in the orginal Question above that states anything about Softball. Anything from Car Talk you can rest assured they are talking Baseball. In your own words you may want to go back and re-read the Question!

Yeah, that's right. I just kind of assumed a "default" of fastpitch softball since this forum is about...well... :)

Either way, one of the ways of getting to first base without hitting the ball sure wouldn't be by getting a hit, an error or a fielder's choice!

The question is a little vague in a couple of respects. Is it baseball? Is it fastpitch? Is it slow pitch (if it is ASA slow pitch, can we add an automatic intentional walk without any pitches being thrown to the list)?

Is it Major League baseball, high school baseball or Little League? The answer could change depending on which rule set you're using.

And what do they mean by "a player"? Are we talking about a batter in the batter's box legally attaining a right to advance and occupy first base? A "player" could mean anybody on the field. Would the shortstop running on or off the field from his position who touches first base count?

Back in the day, I was considered as quite a bit of a "player". I remember the time I got to first base with Sally Jones at the drive-in movie...does that count? :D

My assumption is that the original question falls into the baseball world...

Bretman, did you say "back in the day" and "drive-in-movie" in the same sentence  ...

it was pretty funny though

No need to apologize. No nerve struck.

I was only pointing out that the original question was about getting to first without hitting the ball, nothing more.

The rest was just goofing around and having some fun with the question!

1) WALK
2) Hit-by-pitch
3) Catcher's Interference or Catcher's Obstruction
4) Dropped 3rd Strike
5) Pinch Runner

Many had these. Just got the answer to let you guys off the hook. I know you have nothing else to do but worry about the "answer".

does your wife talk to my wife... spending time on OFC seems to come with a little interference at times. I'm glad it's not just me.

Its all about timing, I always get picked off before getting to first base. I would say yes the wives seemed to have gone to the same training camps.
