[Softball] Softball Advances to Postseason for First Time Since '13

MONTREAT, N.C. – The Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) announced its 2018 softball tournament field, and included for the first time since 2013 are the Montreat Cavaliers. The Cavs (16-30, 11-13) will face the the top seed of the eight-team field, the Truett McConnell Bears to open the tournament on Wednesday.

Montreat's last week of the regular season included a doubleheader against the Allen University Yellow Jackets whom they swept in convincing style (15-3, 12-0) and then a twinbill against Truett McConnell on Thursday in which the Bears prevailed. The scores of those games were 12-4 and 11-8, and in the short span of an afternoon Montreat closed ground on the league leaders.

The Cavaliers head to the postseason with Kelsey Nolasco (SO/Casa Grande, AZ) leading the team with a .382 batting average and her .536 OBP is the best in the entire AAC and 15th in the country. Nolasco also leads the squad with 39 hits, including 10 doubles, and three home runs. Abby Swilley (SO/Riceville, TN) is tops on the team with five round-tripper, while Ronnie Ellis (SO/Augusta, GA) leads the Cavs with 28 RBIs. Shortstop Mikki Shelton (SO/Old Fort, NC) has eight triples and and 17 walks, both team highs.

On the mound, Cailin Warner (SO/Portland, OR) is the team leader in innings pitched with 101.1. She also leads the team in wins (6), strikeouts (79), and ERA (3.59). The Cavs' #2 starter in wins (4), strikeouts (31), and innings pitched is sophomore Allison Moody. Swilley and Ellis have both been significant contributors on the mound with 43.1 and 45.1 innings pitched, respectively.

As a team, this year's 11 conference victories for Montreat were the most since the 2009 campaign.
