I have a pitcher that has some shoulder tendonitus. It seems to be much worse after she plays volleyball. Does anyone else have anyone with arm problems due to both sports?

I HAVE PARENTS WHO LET THEIR KIDS SIGN UP FOR 3 DIFFERENT SPORTS KNOWING THAT TWO OF THOSE TEAMS WILL GET SCREWED ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. I HAVE A BASKETBALL PLAYER WHO SHOWS UP AT SOFTBALL PRACTICE
JUST WORN OUT AND WORTH NOTHING TO THE TEAM. WHY DO THESE PARENTS ALLOW THEIR KIDS TO DO THIS ????
THEY DON'T KNOW THE MEANING OF "COMMITMENT" I GUESS.

My daughter has had shoulder trouble since she started pitching-tendinitis and bursitis. Serving in volleyball aggrevated it. They made her the libero (SP?), a defensive specialist, and now she can play and doesn't have to serve.

It usually gets better during basketball season and then flairs up when they make her pitch during High school ball. She is a shortstop during the travel ball season. Right now she is playing, icing, and taking a prescription anti-inflammatory. I would suggest 2 Aleve and some physical therapy (exercise with rubber bands) to strenghthen the back muscles. It has really helped my daughter.

Good luck, I hope she will be able to continue playing all the different sports she enjoys!

My daughter has pitched since she was 10, with professional instruction, and started playing volleyball in 7th grade, both school volleyball and club volleyball. Within 4 months (in Dec '03), she began having shoulder soreness that was diagnosed as tendonitis. She has been under a doctor's care since. She too was switched to defense only in volleyball to protect her shoulder. After fighting this problem for more than a year, and trying to pitch around/through the pain all last summer, she finally had surgery in March of this year, and will miss her entire 14U season. Her labrum was stretched out beyond what could heal naturally, and could not hold her shoulder stable.

Anyway, I believe that pitching in softball and hitting/serving in volleyball is a bad combination. The pitching stretches the labrum and shoulder muscels (you can tell this by how a fastpitch pitcher's pitching shoulder often droops lower than their other shoulder) and then the volleyball hitting/serving adds a tremendous amount of shock to an already loose joint. This often results in an "overuse injury", and yes I should have been more educated about what could happen to her and never have allowed her to play both sports, especially simultaneously. I'm sure that some girls are built such that they can handle the stress of both, but it is a huge risk that I wish that I had never allowed her to take. I really didn't think much about it at the time. She wanted to play so I let her. Big mistake. The upside is that my daughter is doing very well and her doctor seys that she will make a full recovery, and should be stronger than ever. But, she will pitch (I hope) OR play volleyball, not both. I hope that this lengthy post helps someone else avoid the same mistake.

When I coached T-Ball about 8 years ago, I had a young lady who had a golf swing when she batted. ?I talked to her parents and they told me that they had her in golf lessons. ?I told the parents that a golf swing and a baseball/softball swing do not mix well together and that if I taught her how to properly swing a bat then the golf swing would suffer. ?The parents had not actually realized this and they made a good decision for their DD that she would concentrate on golf and just have fun with T-ball (as T-ball should be).

There are some parents that do not realize the problems with kids trying to do several sports at one time, the physical mechanics required for each sport, and the inability for those mechanics to mix together. ?They see the possible limelight for their DD and try to push her into it or, heaven forbid, readjust the light post.

Just my experience and my opinion.

As a physical therapist assistant and has a daughter who pitches and plays more than one sport I suggest you talk with a doctor and get into physcial therapy. Do not give inflammatory pill unless your doctor suggest this, ice other wise. Thera band is a great work out, but don't let people outside the profession advise you into doing something that may injure her more. Please get with your doctor and take care of her under a Dr supervision. Great advise from above, but if you are not a professional I would suggest no advise at all.

Our daughter is a 3 sport athlete and starting pitcher for both her 16u team & her high school varsity team. She has been pitching since she was 9y/o and also playing basketball and Volleyball since 7th grade. She has had aches and pains off and on but mainly in her back, we have found that by having her work with a trainer for the past 3 years on a regular bases had definitely decrease the injuries and helped her endurance in all sports. The trainer is trying to keep all her muscled toned and balanced....The pitching coaches do hate the fact she plays volleyball, during volleyball season her speed does drop 3-5mph....But bottom line the kid loves sports and is very fit and happy.
