After this weekends pitching my dd is complaining of a sore arm. :'( She is hounding me to go out and pitch but I think she needs a days rest. She has lessons tomorrow and will be pitching for an hour. Should I cave? :-/ I told her no, but now she is telling me her arm is fine. Should I stick by my mom knows best, or should I trust that she will be fine for a half hour pitching?

Rest it. Usually a sore arm is a sign that something was off on her mechanics the last time she threw. Personally my dd does not touch a ball the day before a tournement or the day after. We are still at 12u though. I never read this anywhere, but just from past history it seems she throws harder and more focused if rested the day before.

i say rest it...especially the day before or after a tourney...all players should rest their arms the day before or after a tournament...you don't want to over work her arm....be sure to ice ice ice ice ice ice...20 min. on the arm

I would rest it. Give the muscle fibers time to heal. Better safe than sorry.

What part of her arm? Forearm? Elbow area? Shoulder?

It's pretty tough to prescribe a course of treatment without first knowing more details. Is this common with her, or is this the first time she's complained about it? Joint pain might indicate something a little more serious - possibly caused by something that needs corrected in her mechanics. "Tightness" in her forearm could simply be fatigue, or maybe she's just learning to throw a different pitch, using muscles that she hasn't used a lot.

Make sure she's not throwing with just her arm - the legs are just as important, especially as she gets older. Make sure her pitching coach is aware of any pain she is having. I would also suggest using a doctor that has a specialty of sports medicine. My DD never iced until she was in college, and only because of sore forearm muscles from spins. But every kid is built different. Do exactly what an experienced sports trainer or physician recommends, and you can't go wrong.

Conditioning and proper form are ultimately the keys. A good indicator of a pitcher being in excellent condition AND sound mechanics is that her legs will give out before anything else.

There is no joint pain. She has a sore tricep and the muscle behind her should (Delt I believe). She did learn a new pitch and I told her that was probably what was happening. She is using different muscles to throw this one. I'll make sure to tell her coach tonight. She did not complain this morning so I'm sure the rest did her good. Thanks Sammy! ;D
