Dear Athletes & Parents:

I have been coaching fastpitch for many years (13) and have been an observer of the game for even longer. When I began coaching my goal was to do my best to produce well trained athletes. Along the way I have seen and learned allot. I have also helped players develope from eight and nine years old to now having some from this same group make it to the college ranks in all divisions. I have a good understanding of what works and what doesn't work and what a female athlete needs to do to be in a position to get a college scholarship offer and succeed at this level as well.

In the past and this is still true in some cases today, the athletes that made it to the next level were the ones who were naturally more athletic and had a good head on their shoulders. These numbers were fairly limited and few of us around here heard about or knew very many girls who actually went on and played at the next level. These kids were naturally gifted and in some cases worked harder than their peers on their skills, but generally just relied on their natural abilities to stay above the rest. One of the things I also noticed was that these girls got to college and were surprised at the level of fitness and strength training that they now had to incorporate into their training at the college level to compete against an entire roster of girls just like them.

What I have seen firsthand recently is how average to slightly above average athletes can drastically improve their game and their stock as a college prospect by adding strength training to their routine at a younger age. This is especially true for female athletes. Along with preventing injuries, (which females are more susceptable to) females do not naturally gain muscle and strength like males do as they get older. Many male athletes, especially baseball players can simply rely on nature to add muscle to their bodies and perform quite well and at a higher level as they get older. Female athletes though need to understand their bodies do not get stronger naturally and gain muscle naturally in the same way. Just playing a sport or multiple sports will not make you stronger or faster... strength, agility and speed training in addition to your sport will however.

Fastpitch is a sport that involves short bursts of strength and power. Throwing, hitting and running short distances is what the sport is. All of these activities need to be done with force and quickness which is only enhanced with strength, speed and agility training.

Workhouse is dedicated to producing not only elite hitters, but elite athletes. Our goal is to produce the next generation of fastpitch athletes. The athletes that are walking on to campuses around the country with not only great skills but that are stronger, faster and more athletic then in the past.

In order to make this a reality, we are going to be adding this to our list of services at the Westerville location. We have brought in a certified trainer who trains young athletes from many sports. We are currently developing our sport specific package and are calling it FASST: Fastpitch Agility Speed Strength Training

All athletes will go through an individual assessment to determine strengths and weaknesses and specific programs will be designed for each.

The overall program will be a combination of development of strength and speed/agility with many warm-up and agility drills that involve fastpitch specific technique training.

The training is broken down to teach the athletes correct form in all lifts and plyometric drills. Each phase will incorporate injury prevention exercises.

There will be two levels of training: Group 1: 6th-8th graders Group 2: 9th-12th graders

Program Goal

The goal of the program is to increase strength, speed, power, agility, flexibility and reduce the risk of common softball related/overuse type injuries. In addition, the softball specific drills combined with the general strength/speed/ agility training will produce a stronger, faster more confident athlete. One of the key differences that should be noted is that we will evaluate each athlete and design a program around their specific needs, and the training will be done in small groups so that each athlete is being pushed to a higher level every week. The athletes that commit to training consistanly will notice more speed and quickness on defense, both hand and foot speed. The general strength and core/ grip emphasis will produce faster bat speeds and better bat control. The athletes overall power will be noticeably improved.

The training will be two days a week at the Westerville location. All athletes are required to make their workouts two times per week and commit to the full program to get the needed results.

The cost is $150.00 per month and time slots will be available after 6pm on weekdays and during the day on Saturdays and Sundays. All athletes and parents must attend an orientation and assessment prior to their schedule being set.

Sign-ups and payments need to be done in person at the facility: 175 East Broadway, Westerville, Ohio 43081. On September 2nd, 2012 starting at 8am and going to 3pm.

Initial assessments and orientations will be done at this time also, plan to spend at least 1 hour. Please email to schedule your time slot: workhouseFASST@gmail.com The athletes will need at least one parent with them and come prepared in workout clothes and good indoor training shoes.

There is access to the facility from Sunbury Road to avoid traffic in Uptown Westerville.

The equipment is all in, we are working through the program in dry runs and have quite a few signed up already. Teams are encouraged to train together, either high school or travel. Intense training at a high level will create a bond within your team that is much deeper than standard skills practices. Coaches email for team discounts and any other questions you may have.
