This is an open call out to all TD's of fall tournaments. Please state in your tournament listings, the 14U pitching distance you will use for your fall tournaments. I have no interest in any tournaments that will use a 40' pitcher's plate this fall. I don't care what you use, I just want to know so I can plan accordingly. I would hope almost all if not all tournaments will be at 43'.

Any news on what ASA and NSA are doing with 14u pitching distance?

FOR USSSA, 14U is 43 ft starting Aug1, 2010.

I beleive it says 2010 is optional but mandatory on Jan 1 2011.

Anyone else come to the same conclusion ?

I sent email to ASA and NSA reps. Both responded.
ASA will discuss and make ruling on 14u pitching distance in November at their National meeting.
NSA stated that they allowed both 40 or 43 feet this year for 14u tournaments. And as of now, further discussion of this rule is not on their agenda at their National meeting (also in November). But they added that may change.

It's a done deal. All high school is 43' now, Utrip is 43'. ASA will not lag. I'm surprised they are this far behind the game.

You think that 43 feet will hinder some pitchers for awhile till the learning curve is made?

The initial study stated
  • more balls in play
  • spike in every offensive category
  • increase of atleast 3 runs per game
  • 12% increase in batting averages
I think pitchers will need to perfect their location and speed since the batters have 3 more feet for timing adjustments.....Should make defense that much more important.

I really can't see the extra 3' making that big of a difference. Most should really be pitching long every so often anyways. DD moved up to 40' this year and I will warm her up from 50' for a couple of pitches. The increase in speed when put back at the 40' is incredible. They learn that all power comes from the legs and utilize that completely. The key is keeping the release point the same.

My daughter will be in her 2nd year of 14u. When she sees her pitching coach she always practices from 43 feet. Little adjustments at the beginning but it came together pretty quickly. She has been doing this since last year. I agree that offensive statistics will go up, but a good pitcher will make the adjustment needed pretty quick. I dont think its nearly as difficult of an adjustment than it was going from 10u with 35 feet and a smaller ball to 40 feet and a bigger ball. Practice, practice, practice.
