Team Captains...

Dividing team or chosen leaders? No one has stepped up on their own. I'm wondering if a little 'encouragement' from their peers may be the way to go... What are your thoughts?

We are trying to build some leaders and have 4 co captains this year and it looks like it will work. Leading by example with a taskforce on a team can boost the four and the entire team in teamwork, it will grow on them. Looks good on paper any how..... found the pressure of a captain co captain can be too much for them at times so power in numbers and teamwork always produces good results.

Eh, never thought designating a captain was an especially good idea.

The girls know who the leaders are... they make themselves known (it's the nature of leadership). I think an official title is unnecessary and can sometimes be counter-productive. Just sayin...

I agree with you kjb, I have thought about it in the past - leaders establish themselves through their production and work ethic - no need to force it... I did think about choosing a C/co-C for each tourney based on their week of practice etc ... let each earn it and rotate it ...

If you have some take charge girls who are leaders the other girls will follow them anyway. If they are not leaders or the other girls don't respect them (for whatever reason, even very petty ones) it will just create dissension and jealousy. I say leave things take care of themselves, but tell your best players that they need to lead by example and they should also be encouraging the weaker players. Their actions will be far more important than anything the coach does as far as slapping a title on. In softball theres is no real defined role for a captain during a game, so there is no need to name one

Have seen team captains as a bad thing in the past. They tend to think there better then the other girls, and just boss them around. Leaders will be leaders with or without being named captain. Giving them the name will not make them leaders.

I have seen the designation of captains work very, very well ... and I have seen it backfire also. A lot depends on the age and maturity of the girls chosen to be captain, as well as how they're selected. I think if you asked the DD's college coach, that the designation of captains this year worked extremely well and contributed to the success and cohesiveness of the team. But I also think he took a year off from captains last year because of a bad experience 2 years ago. Again, it all depends, but I have a problem with blanket statements that they're a bad idea.

Maybe taking the hardest playing players with most fire in their bellies aside, and explaining what I expect from them will be enough without putting a title to it....

I think that is the way to go......you have made her captain without naming one and you can see how she does.....

Totally agree no need for titles on softball teams ,girls seem to get offended more when titles are handed out let the natural leader lead. What does the captain do anyways ?
