Temporary Players

Is it just me or is there a greater need for temporary players across all age groups this year than in past seasons ?

I started to vote on your poll but I think that the three things you identified: economy, injuries, and families that just don't want to go (which I am thinking is closely related to the economy, though there may be families who feel that the particular nationals doesn't warrant the expense when viewed in light of the college exposure factor) are pretty much equal. So I'd like to be able to vote for all three, which is not possible on the poll.

BTW, if the team has always indicated that it will go to a particular nationals if it gets a berth, I would hope that any decision by a family not to attend would be based on changed economic circumstances and not on other factors, barring exigent circumstances. If a majority of the players planned on and want to attend a nationals, I think it is a shame to put that team in the position of not being able to go because at the relatively last minute some players changed their minds. JMHO and I know that if the team didn't qualify for its preferred nationals there are some rational arguments against my opinion.

I voted for other because like cgs, I think it is a combination of all of them wrapped up in a lack of commitment bow.

CGS,

I understand and the intentions of the poll was not to question the decisions made, but rather to get a better understanding of why.

Economy - I know this has been a tough year on us all, but there are signs of improvement in various markets.

Injuries - What can we ( as parents and / or coaches ) due to help prevent injuries in the future through better conditioning or training.

Parents - Unfortunately there are those that "buy-in" early on , but as the season starts getting long, decide they are done. ( and not for economic reasons)

Sorry, I guess "Other" should have been " All of the above" ;)

Injuries. Enroll them in a PEP program if you have one locally. It will prevent knee injuries.

Maybe there has been a greater amount of turnover or, positions never filled in the first place?

I am wondering if it is a case of "The grass is greener on the other side". I don't think people bat an eye anymore at jumping ship if they are upset about playing time, position, or feel their kid is too good for the team. Everyone is looking out for what's better for their daughter and not the team. Can't say I agree with this philosophy, but things happen The loyalty is just not there. Girls leave, more are needed to fill rosters.

I know for my 11u team it was injuries. This was the worst season I have been involved with. We had 2 outfielders crash chaseing a ball in the gap, a pitcher who was diagnosed with scoliosis, a broken finger off a swing. I have had pick up players the last 2 tournaments just to have enough to play. Tough year for sure!

Between graduations, hs basketball/volleyball camps, vacations, & injuries we've had quite a few temps.

Could it be the typical July drama? Parents emotions boil over due to lack of playing time while opposing coaches are poaching? 'Tis the season!

It is the end of season push.

Teams are folding. Girls are quiting. Parents are ****ed.........Tis the season.

We spent all year at 9/10 girls. We had 8 different girls wanting to join us for Worlds. It is just that time of the year.

I would think that in the 16U and 18U age groups, the earlier start of many schools and OHSAA allowing the fall sports to start earlier would greatly impact teams the last weekend of July and the first week of August. Pick up players for Nationals used to just involve teams trying to add a great player to strengthen the team; now it involves trying to add players to have enough to play.

I agree. This year high school fall sports started 8-1-11. One week earlier than in the past. 10 day contact practices and fall tourneys are going on this week and next. We all know the mandantory rules, but that doesn't stop a coach from not playing a kid that doesnt go.

I know that one of our players is being forced to choose between playing at nationals and being on the volleyball squad. She has played volleyball for the HS before so it is not as though the HS volleyball coach doesn't know her talent level. Last I heard third parties were trying to negotiate on her behalf. I just hope that she will get some relief from this initial decision.

cgs, it happens a lot with our local girls and every year we know of a handful that go thru the same scenario you describe. Most of the time softball loses too. This is the kind of thing that's upsetting to me and the kind of thing administrators and OHSAA should be policing. There's always so much blame on travel ball when there's a chance the ratio reflects the same amount of involvement by school coaches intimidating players with the classic "or else" attitude.
