Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Tennis outlaws grunting - can we adopt the same rule in softball?

It just seems like a good idea - I recall that tennis did a study and documented that the grunting added nothing to the speed of the balls being hit. So, let's go to having pitchers just pitch, and not vocalize.

Or, we could require batters to scream with every swing...

My DD never grunted, but I and she could care less if they do. Why would it be outlawed? Because it's annoying? Can't think of any competitive advantage, safety reason, or improvement to the game for such a rule ...

Grunting is nothing more than a vocal exhale of air. Power lifters do it, pitchers do it, tennis players do it... IN SHORT.... WHO CARES. You can always go play ******, I'm pretty sure they don't do it. It's part of the game. Heck, it you want your batters to do it, that would be fine in my book.

None of my pitchers grunt but I certainly don't mind it. Aot of the times the parents are much more annoying than any grunting pitcher I've ever heard. It may not increase the velocity of the ball but if it makes the pitcher feel like she throws better, than I say go for it....use those stomach muscles and grunt away ladies!!! :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

The grunting might be annoying but so are most parents. Heck we don't outlaw them. As far as the farting goes, pretty sure most teams would be w/o coaches! ;&

ManitouDan brings up a good point. Dd's pitching coach discourages grunting. He says for an astute batter, grunting can be an indicator of what pitch is being thrown (DD doesn't grunt with change-ups), or her level of energy/confidence (quieter when tired, less confident). Makes sense and we can see it play out in games sometimes.

His advice is motivating her to pitch with a quieter approach.

It would depend when you fart...........and who's doing the farting. For the catcher, I would think it would not help your strike zone.

Geez...they have basically out-ruled "chatter" (hey batter, batter, batter - SWING!!!)...I got in trouble a few years back cause a coach complained my fielders slapping their gloves while creeping during the release of the ball was distraction...Must have been the sole reason for the 16-2 beat-down we were delivering! :)

Oh this would kill my youngest DD. She thinks farting is a badge of honor. ;&

All very funny comments.
DD used to yawn during pitching lessons or towards the end of a game, turned out she wasn't breathing properly while pitching. We talking about loud exhalation or grunting as a way of making sure she was breathing/exhaling correctly during pitches. She did it for a couple of weeks and then learned how to breath without making any noise because, in her words: "grunting is dumb and embarrassing".

Oh the pressures we put on pitchers, I can't believe were discussing grunting! Does it matter..... Who cares! Just let them have fun and feel comfortable.

I agree with the consensus. My DD pitches and does not vocalize however as a hitter, when she drives a shot up the middle on a grunter she seems to smile a bit more as she reaches base. :cap: I say let them be!
