First off, please don't look at this as a generalization of umpires, being from Trumbull County, we have some of the best umps in the state! However, there are certain things that an Ump will do, that just erk me.

1. As a coach, when I come to, we'll say "discuss" a play or rule, please blue, don't let your first line of argument be "I've been doing this for xx years". Just seems ridiculous, 90% of the time, I just want to know the rule for my own knowledge growth!

2. When we disagree, and we will, as soon as I say ok, and walk away, you have to drop it, if your right, and I back down, why continue to argue with me? Also, if I choose to waste a little playing time arguing a call, I'll answer for it to my players and parents. Blue, do not waste my players playing time proving your point.

and remember, I don't feel this way about the majority of umpires, just a select few!

I understand your frustration.

But often we see just the opposite - The coach tells how he/she has been doing this for "X number of years", and how that coach will keep hammering on Blue for the rest of the game because of one "questionable" call.

If cooler heads would prevail from either side, the game would be more enjoyable for everybody concerned.

I have been a part of coaching the game for years, and had my share of frustrations with umpires. This year I am a brand spanking new umpire, and have a new respect for the man behind the plate. There are so many things the umpires are responsible for at the same time. I still believe there are some umpires that have no business officiating, just as I feel there are many coaches that have no business managing. Bottom line, if you are coaching, know the rules, and you won't need a clarification. If you don't go out to argue, then no one has to walk away. If a coach had a mob follow him around all day and tell him every decision he made was wrong, no matter what the choice, he would probably get a little snappy too. BTW this is not directed at the OP, just a statement in general.

Agreed. And I completely respect the man in blue, I always remind my girls how tuff that job is. it does go both ways depending on the individual in either position.

This happens every where, every day with all kinds of different people. It's a pet peeve of mine. If you are right about something and I finally agree with you, I feel it's very rude of you to point out over and over again WHY YOU ARE RIGHT". And yet, it happens all the time. I try not to do it when I win an argument, but I have to remind myself how obnoxious it is!!! It must be very deep in our human nature to keep rehashing it!!!!

OK - here is the scary thing - I have been coaching for alot of years - I just passed my umpire test and I have come to realize that some of the stuff I was arguing about, I was wrong! What wrong? I agree with prior post - completely new respect and perspective...................

This is one that bothers me, too. But I usually that get from an umpire who I'm working with that I've never met before.

I've found that when the conversation starts off with, "I've been doing this for X-number of years", more often than not I'm in for a long afternoon with a sub-par partner. While experience can be a good thing, usually this indicates someone who equates longevity with competence.

I know plenty of guys that have been doing this for a long time that still make first-year rookie mistakes. They don't have twenty years of experience. They have one year of experience, twenty times over!

I can't stand when an ump makes the game about him ! That ump that always has stop and explain to you some rule that he thinks you don't know about . I don't like to heckle an ump but at the same time an ump can not have " rabbit ears " ! No matter what call the ump makes someone is going to disagree , so you have to expect some feedback . I have another one and that is just because a throw makes it before the runner sliding in doesn't automatically mean the player is out , sometimes the girl does actually make it in under the tag !
