My advice as a third base coach would be take a bucket out with you. Sit on it. Then enjoy the game from a good view. Lol. When there are roughly 100 people screaming and yelling no one listens to the third base coach anyway. Work on the proper things in practice and hope for the best. At least for the younger kids anyway!

Even though the video is funny I was able to get a couple tips on Coaching 3rd base.

Green Light signal, meaning the base runner can advance to 3rd base.

Red Light Signal, meaning your going to hold on second base.

Yellow Light signal, meaning the fielders have a possible play on you.

Right over here!
Third base coaching is really the lifeblood of the offence. Third base coach has to be able to do the following:

1. Tell batter what to do; or not do for that matter.
2. Call runners from 1st and 2nd
3. Communicate with 1st base coach

This all has to be done between pitches because the situation is always changing. VERY difficult to do. So I would say there are traits a third base coach should have as well. There is a difference between having the knowledge and having the ability!

Positioning is the key thing to learn. Remember you have to be where the runner from 2nd can easily see you. I put myself down third base line towards home plate. That way I can see the field and what is going on. The runner is turning third and can pick me up easily, but also can see if I give the sign to slide.

Yes. All the screams from the fans makes it really difficult which is why I have learned over the years to not speak but to only do sign language to them. It takes practice, but after one game the girls pick it up rather quickly. My right hand controls the runner coming to third while my left hand control the runner going to second.

The girls know that if a call is being yelled out that it is not coming from me or the first base coach and it makes it easier for them not to do what the fans are telling them and confusing my voice with the fans. This has also confused the defense as they don't know if I am sending a runner or holding them.

I love the you tube video also. pretty funny, but I took some things back from it.

Don't coach 3rd if you are eating nachos or drinking a large drink. These props get in the way when dodging line shots from the batter or worse yet you actually get a runner coming to or going past 3rd. waving them in while balancing a paper container of nachos should be left to the true pro's in the game.

Play the "air guitar" out there! Agressive baby!! :)

But seriously:
-Study the other team's catcher and know your own players speed, sliding ability, and instincts.
-Remind them of the game situation. Even team USA does this. Such as "We got 1 out, on the ground we gotta go, tag in the air, freeze on a line" help get reassure they can react to those situations.
-read the game situations (score/ outs/ batter/ count) and determine what play is best to put your team in the best situation. I.E. bunts, hit and run, straight steal, squeeze play etc..
- play the odds like a poker player.
-play to win, don't play to not lose

I am happy to share my thoughts on coaching third base with anyone interested. It's too much for me to type here, so if anyone is interested, just PM me or e-mail me at jabraham@hillsdale.edu.

I will have to disagree with some of the others because I think a good 3B coach is worth their weight in gold. They are not and can not be a spectator of the game, but have to be totally on top of what's going on ... the score, the number of outs, the speed of the runners on base, the strengths and weaknesses of the batter, the positioning and the abilities of the players on defense, the time limit if there is one, the tendencies of the pitcher and catcher, etc. Among the more diffcult tasks to do is picking up the following runner when they've already sent the runner before home. Their job is to dictate the strategy of the offense, and the players's jobs are to execute it. While I would never suggest the 3B coach's job is as important as the execution of the players, I will argue that the difference between a good 3B coach and a bad 3B coach on a team that has the talent to compete could easily be the difference of 3-5 wins over the course of a 50 game season.
