Tournaments time limits

This year for our tournament we did the rule of 60min time limit, finish the inning, then play one more inning. This was the first year in the last 4 years that i did not recieve a single complaint about stalling. Years prior I as TD would get 10 to 20 complaints. I did notice that teams where still playing the same amount of innings per game between 5 to 7 innings per game. But this did seem to make coaches , players and fans less worried about the time constraints. There seemed to be alot less preasure on everyone.

So did anyone else play in tournaments with these rules, if so what did you think of them.....besides the norm WE HATE ANY TIME LIMITS, PLAY 7 INNINGS

Interesting. What was stagger time between games in order to keep things on schedule 1:30 or 1:45?

Loved this format ! We played in 2 tournaments that had "plus one more" and it was well received by everyone. Hopefully it becomes the norm

The Starzz copied that format this year. I believe the games were staggered 90 minutes.

Used one and half hrs... only a few games got behind because of ITB on elim day..one field had 3 games back to back in ITB

i also really enjoyed this format. The time limit seems like it sneaks up on you and you always wish you had 1 more inning

The Stinger Smackdown had the 60 minute "plus one more"...I liked it much better than a drop dead

We also had our first experience with this format and found it to be a very good way to timline the games. Agree with the stalling comment...it does help negate that issue knowing there will be one more inning regardless.

Played in several USSSA tournaments in WPA where they used a no new inning after 1:20 and then finish that inning. The games were scheduled every 1.5 hours and to my surprise the tournaments do not run behind.

I think because just as many visiting teams were behind as home teams so the bottom of that last inning was not needed. Did not see much stalling and certainly not like you get with drop dead when the score reverts to the last complete inning. They felt like a full game when they were low scoring.

I'd have to go thru one like that before making a decision on it. We played in 3 this year at 1:40 finish the inning and loved it. Girls, coaches, and umpires got plenty of down time. Ground crews had ample time to do things right instead of half-arsed. It was nice to see softball take priority over the bottom line.

I can't say I even noticed it at your tourney Parma. I think as long as you finish the inning instead of drop-dead that goes a long way to prevent the whole stalling issue. I think over 85% of our games this past weekend got 7 innings in a "No new inning after 80, finish the inning" format. I would say the majority of those that didn't play 7 innings were stop due to mercy rule.

Florida ASA plays all its qualifiers now with 75 minutes, finish the inning plus one. It is GREAT. Most of the older ages get 7 innings in and the stalling at the younger ages has all but ended.

14u states were 60 min

No ASA National Qualifier is to be less than 1 hour 40 minutes...unless they need to adjust for weather.

Don't see how 60 minutes finish the inning, plus one more is any different than 75 minutes finish the inning, 80 minutes finish the inning, or even 90 minutes finish the inning. Sounds like the old bait and switch to me. If you don't have drop dead, stalling doesn't really occur.

14u States were weather related,,,,,,,,,for fridays weather and all pool play games were cancelled

Yes you still can stall with what ever time limit and finish the inning. If you are in an inning you are home team you can stall to make sure that that inning is the last one, or if the away team with home team batting in the bottom of the order maybe you stall to make sure it is the last inning and their top of the order will not get to bat..

Stalling seems to be an issue with some of the games we have played. I like the 60 min plus one rule.

I always wondered why softball wants to rush through their games ? I don't think it should be like baseball where the games last forever , but come on drop dead time limits are rediculous ! Let the girls play !

Would much rather have this method, (for pool play) than the 90 min. ones. Those are long days!

Amount of teams and amount of fields and amount of game time slots... is all in the equation... for larger tournaments.

Don't like drop dead personally. Like full games with it being played on the field and not by a clock.

But, the time limit plus one full inning is a thought .. when comparing to other methods... that is best. Stalling can still happen.. and coaches will figure a way to do so.. like Parma explained.
