I?m curious about the ethics behind a travel softball organization having their coaches as JV and Varsity High School coaches.

We are noticing a little bit of a trend in the area that I live, where a certain travel team has their coaches as both the JV and Varsity Coaches, and Assistant Coaches on both teams. The situation is that there is a very obvious trend of these coaches promoting some of their much younger players, (7[SUP]th[/SUP] and 8[SUP]th[/SUP] grade) to varsity, and also to JV, over some of the much more seasoned and mature players in 9[SUP]th[/SUP] and 10[SUP]th[/SUP] grade. In the coming years, most of the Varsity spots for the current sophomore, and freshman players are nearly gone with the promotion of their travel softball team players.

I?m sure this is a conflict of interest

Just curious if anyone else has experienced this sort of situation, and how you addressed it

Thanks
John

the entire team is composed of good players, but the issue is that the older players are being sat for the younger players from their "pay for play" team. not to mention the freshman and sophomores that are good players that were cut for them to bring up 7th and 8th grade players that could be playing modified still.

I should also mention that i do not have a child on this team.

You're saying the coach is burning HS eligibility of 7th and 8th graders to play on a JV team in some cases? Seems likes there's more to it than this. Doesn't pass the smell test.

Remember rules vary by state. I believe Kentucky doesn't have the 4 year eligibility rule and middle schoolers can play on HS team for like 6 years. Assuming that's the case here.

have heard about a HS coach who oversees a select organization and makes it known that if girls want to play varsity, they will play for his organization in the summer... that seems even worse.

i assume the OP is from Kentucky or somewhere were junior high players can play high school ball. So everyone complains in Ohio about OHSAA rules that include prohibiting high school coaches from coaching their players in travel ball and/or more than a certain amount of times. Here's one of the issues that can surface if you don't have rules like this.

Now perhaps the younger girls in this school are actually the best players, and more than likely, the high school coaches aren't going to personally profit from having these girls play on both teams other than that their travel ball team is going to be all the better for the experience these girls get from the extra time with the coaches. The way the original post is worded, it's making it sound like that the travel organization is promoting a conflict of interest, while the real issue (if there is one) should be with the high school.

Clydesdale's post is the other issue that can happen ...

I see it as more of a problem with HS coaches that coach or run travel teams/programs lol

Can you elaborate on that.. There are a large number of travel coaches coaching HS now. What are the top concerns? Thanks....

Agree, Warren seems to be a lack of attention to detail in the HS coaching realm. Lack of practices between games to work on problem areas.A lot of lets just go out and play and lets let see how it goes. Some of the misunderstanding of how the game is coached and played at the higher levels causes some parents to wonder why things are the way they are when travel coachs are in charge on HS teams.

According to my sources, 4 have verballed already (two Big Ten, two Horizon League) and two others have several offers from Big Ten and SEC, etc. schools but havn't made there choices (these two are sophomores and one of them was the one that was benched) so that would be 6 D 1 recruits. there is also a division 2 signee. 5 of the D1 recruits play for the outlaws.

Keystone should certainly be undefeated and a heavy favorite to win a state title with all these stud D1 players.......SMH

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing about keystone- all I can speak about is that I have a keystone girl on my team and she has nothing but nice things to say about him. She has not received anything that you talk about from him. She doesn't feel threatened and has never heard him mention playing for another team. She actually played for sundogs last year, but switched to my team and nothing was said to her but good things.

I would address the "situation" by thanking the coaches for putting the best 9 kids on the field and for not listening to the entitlement crowd that think the lineup should be based on grade level instead of ability.
