Tryout dates

Question for all.

Does it make a difference in the minds of parents and players when tryouts are scheduled? There were a number of tryouts the first weekend of August when many teams were still at Nationals. After that, there were tryouts scheduled this past weekend, simply a week after returning. Obviously, a coach is evaluating their team the entire year, and should have a good idea of what they need or don't, but do you want a little more down time before the tryouts begin? There has been much discussion on whether to take the first offer, putting timelines on accepting, etc.

Does it hurt a team holding tryouts a little later (say 2nd weekend in August or later) and that many of the players that were going to show have already committed? It sounds like many players are holding off on accepting until all the tryouts they wanted to attend are over. I would guess this is more prevalent at 14U and up rather than 12U and down. Do 12U and under parents jump quicker at offers simply because of inexperience?

I just wish they weren't all scheduled for the same two weekends. You may have 6-7 (or more) teams you want to try out for, but because of tryout schedules (and traveling distance from one to the next), you have to eliminate some. I know, you can always ask for a private tryout, but really, does everyone need their team set September 1?

Hmmm...to be honest, my dd's team went to nationals and so August 1st tryouts were way too early for her- she is a late 98 b-day and has to move up to 12u- bigger ball and 40ft so making the switch that soon is not feasible. DD went to tryouts last weekend (7th, 8th, 9th) because she wanted to take a look at these 3 organizations, and since she is a pitcher, by the 9th- she showed fatigue as she probably threw 250+ pitches on Saturday. There are 2 other teams that she would like to take a look at that are later in August but right now, she is weighing her options with her current team and the other teams. As far as September tryouts go- i really want her to take some time off from pitching-just be a kid (plus she also plays S*****), I would not be interested in taking dd to tryouts that late....it is probably different for each girl and their situation.

yes it has to hurt to have your first tryout August 15th this year. Unless you are the OC Batbuster 15 and 16 year olds are typically very impatient and don't want to wait. We posted 3 tryout dates within 8 days Wed 5 Sunday 9 Wed 12. many of the people we wanted have chosen to play with other organizations instead of waiting for us to be complete and take the chance that they miss out. Some organizations say they need to know right now or by Tuesday... so they take what they can get instead of wait. I can't imagine having one on the 15th and sifting through the players that are left.

what ever happenned to "good things come to those who wait"?

I personally feel tryout overload the first two weeks. With 90% of the try-outs staggered during that time, and especially with us with a County Fair commitment due to school, a DD can miss a lot of opportunties and just plain run out of time. This is the first year really gearing up for it, and I also wonder what effect an injury has on your child's chances--say getting hit by a pitch on her pitching hand during a tryout? She has no chance to rest or heal, so is she done? This narrow window really magnifies any problem you have. Does somebody who liked her based on what they saw during the year take a chance and hold a spot for her, or do they say we saw Player "X" at tryouts and she was healthy, so......

Some of the Top organizations in the state have not had their tryouts yet, they include the MVX, Cincy Doom, Buckeye Heat, Sapphires, Wolfpack, OFC Heat, Tigerlillies as well as a few others. Must be tough on the teams that have had tryouts and are stuck waiting to hear back from players because they are all waiting on these tryouts.;)

For what it's worth, dd tried out the first time in January/February. Teams are still looking for that one or two special player(s) as the "off" season progresses. BTW, dd is starting her third year with this team.

I think more teams should schedule tryouts on the weekdays. This way girls can attend more tryouts for the teams they want and not have to squrrze them all in on the same day. It also gives parents the weekend off from softball after the season is over :)

If you only have one age group at a time, then weekdays would work.

I agree that there were too many tryouts scheduled at the same time. We had to pick and choose where to go but couldn't juggle them all.

We (Static) had our first weekday tryout in organziation history on Tues & was one of the biggest turnouts we have had w/ over 100+ girls. It turned out really well & will keep this weekday trend ongoing.

Kavin,

That's a heck of a turnout for a weekday. Good luck finding what you're looking for, and we'll see you next spring/summer.

Buckeye Heat '97,

Look forward to some great games between our teams next year. Our last game against each other this summer was epic where both teams battled - maybe next time we might come out on top :)

If you are interested, maybe we can get together for a few scrimmages in the fall/winter if you are interested.

Best of luck in 2010.

Kavin,

Would definitely be interested in some scrimmages. I've been talking to a few other teams too, maybe we can put together a 4 team round-robin, and get a ton of work in. Love to see what we have on the field before we go inside for the winter. We have tryouts this weekend, so give me a little time to get that figured out.

A lot of good points. Be nice to compliment tryouts with one scheduled on a weeknight. If there were weekday tryouts and an offer was given to your DD, then I would expect the team would want a response before the next tryout on the weekend.
