My daughter is looking at switching from 6 seasons of rec ball to travel ball, 12u- with tryouts coming up, I was wondering what we should expect for tryouts? I’m sure not all tryouts are exactly the same, but any input would be greatly appreciated!! :)

Organizations and individual teams will soon be posting ads for tryouts. Perhaps some have already started. I suggest you do a little homework and find out what is in your local area and/or if you are aware of a team you are interested in you contact the head coach. Ask them what their protocol is and get the scoop firsthand. Don't rely on what you hear from a parent or the staff of a different team. They may not have all the details correct. It's not that they would intentionally misguide you. They simply may not know everything a head coach knows.

If you are not sure what you are getting into or unaware of some of the organizations and their history, I suggest you attend a tournament or 2 this summer. Go fishing within your age group of interest. Find the master board or get a copy of the tourney schedule from the tournament director, take a chair, and go watch some games. Speak to the parents. Catch the staff between games and ask questions. Most will be happy to talk with you and share some insight.

Be prepared to share your contact info with them. Have paper and pen handy. Make yourself a list with their contact information. During your conversation with others, ask about their tryout format and what will be expected. Most do a lot of the same things but it's always best to ask yourself and find out. In the mean time, get her birth certificate ready, push your pencil and have an idea what you can afford to spend for a season. Some groups travel more than others. Some just have larger fees just because. It's senseless to pursue an organization that you know you can't afford. That may eliminate some of the teams immediately. You can ask about sponsorship availability but it's not always an option.

Have your daughter take her equipment with her to any tourneys you visit. Have everything you need for her to play available in the car. You never know. You might run across a team needing a body for an upcoming game willing to put her on the roster at the spur of the moment. She just might see some action simply because she's there! Might be the fastest you ever see your daughter run when told to go get her stuff. lol.

Talent and money are determining factors that cannot be ignored. Level of commitment by you to them, if selected, will also need to be agreed upon. Don't be shy. Softball parents love to talk about what they are doing. You simply need to ask a question or 2 and open the dialog.
