tryout season?

I am thinking of having DD go to some tryouts for travel ball after summer ball is done. My question is there a general time most teams have tryouts? Like will there be a rash of tryouts when summer is done and we are getting ready for fall ball?

For instance should I expect to see a lot of teams holding tryouts in August or earlier?

Or is there no paticular times teams load up and it is just sporadic through the year?

Pretty much everyone has them in early to mid-August. Just watch here on OFC starting in June or July and you'll see all the announcements.

Public tryouts are always in mid-August but there are always teams looking for players throughout the year on a private tryout basis.

Used to be tryouts were the last two weeks of August but those days are long gone. Depending upon how the calendar falls with respect to national tournaments, the substantial majority of tryouts will be the first or second weekend of August. For teams not attending a nationals tournament, they may have even earlier tryouts.

Not getting an offer in the first part of August does not mean that a DD won't be able to find a team. After the dust settles from the first two weekends, there will be several teams who will conduct supplemental tryout sessions through mid-September.

Wouldn't you know we will be out of state the second week of August. I will need to keep my eyes and ears open for the end of July and the rest of August for local teams.

Thanks for the info

A lot of teams held tryouts on multiple weekends, so if you were out of town for one, you could still make the other. The process is kind of fun. DD and I enjoyed driving to different areas, meeting new people, and finding the nearest McDonalds afterward.

You will probably see at least five straight weekends of different tryouts to choose from as well as teams that offer to provide private tryouts to fill holes they were unable to fill or accommodate those who were unable to make the publicly advertised ones.

Don't rule out arranging a private tryout for any team where you think your dd would like to play. Most teams are ALWAYS looking... good luck!

If your interested at all in getting her started this summer there are still quite a few teams out there looking for a player or two that if you contacted them you could get a private tryout.

She is still playing rec for the summer. This will give her a chance to work on her hitting before any tryouts. She started going to a recommended hitting coach in the area a coulple of weeks ago and I expect imporovement over the season before tryouts.

I already am starting to see imporovments in her hits in BP.

Most rec leagues are over before most travel seasons start so if she still wants to play during the summer, the opportunity is there. Rec leagues usually finish in June and travel is just getting started in June.

My suggestion is to look in the tournament section and choose a few tournaments that aren't too far and go watch some games and teams. All teams are run differently and have different goals, if you are vaguely familiar with some organizations and how they work, it will make it much easier on you in August. Watch the coaches, the players, and the parents....don't be afraid to introduce yourself and ask questions. If you see some teams that have good coaching and good parents and you like the way they roll, put them on the list as one of the tryouts to go to in August. It all comes down to the better informed you are, the better your chances of finding a good fit and having a good season so get out to the fields and keep your eyes and ears open. Good luck!!

Those are very good points. I would also try to attend a couple of your local high school games and talk to parents and/or players from that team about organizations that they would recommend.

!

really? I thought the travel teams played the same season. Our districts are in June and if we win then State is in July.

I will definiatly head around to some of the local tournaments. Two of the girls that were on our rec ball team last year are playing travel this year so I should be able to get some tournament info.

Good advise Klump ! Do your homework, and observe everything. Especially watch the teams you are interested in when they lose. Some coaches and parents take on a whole new disposition after a loss. ;&

Also would recommend observing some games over the summer. As for the private tryouts, that is always an option if you can't make the public ones, but I think the public ones are a much better way to get a feel for the organization and the talent level trying out.

Many Nationals look to go till Aug. 5th this year........So I'd say the majority of organizations will have try-outs on the weekends of 8/11 & 8/18. Some will be during the week & many will still have the weekend of 8/25. While several will continue to look till July 2013, most will have their rosters set by the 8/26 or crossing their fingers they do.....

If the rec season is over and she is still wanting to play, I would recommend subbing on different teams. You can use that too, and judge just how your dd fits in with different team and also access her skills.

While you are doing all this it is important for her to practice the things they will be doing at tryouts. Many organizations pitch to the players using machines. Is she used to that? I, and most everybody else here, could list a list of "standard" tryout drills that are used, and some that are not so common but do show something specific. If you are interested in that just say and I'll be you will get a good list.

The normal rec season and travel overlapped where my daughter played. And if you committed to All-Stars then that overlaps even more.
