umpires and pride

Had a couple umpires today that didnt see things real well. Couple different plays but one in particular he called a pop out to ss too early an out and girl dropped the ball....his response was that he made the call too early but he had to stand by his call....WHAT? NO YOU DONT!...simple enough to say safe...she dropped the ball...it was weird all day with blue at times but they missed several actual rule calls not just judgement calls...bad umpires at least today...

Our field umps were pretty decent this weekend, but the plate ump today was ....lets just say not good. He was calling them strikes on both sides, but still. How can you tell ur kids to protect the plate when a pitch is 8-10" off the outside corner of the plate and called a strike, I just dont get it?

If the ump is calling it both ways then you are playing to win against a team on the same playing field. You can't let it get to you or you probably lose. Have to adjust.

Ump's we saw at Berliner were "normal". Each home plate ump had their own strike zone we had to adjust to. A few bad calls but I go into every tournament expecting some bad calls so I'm never thrown when I see them. They all handled themselves well, acted professional. DO NOT like the artificial turf. Changes the game. Ball behaves differently. We had one pitching mat that slid forward with every pitch. Had to keep pulling it back. It was BS.

I hate the outdoor turf, makes me want to avoid Berliner because of it. It felt like we were standing on a stove top when we played there in the middle of July. Our cleats were melting flat......what a stupid idea!!!

Our umpires in Akron were good. One had a big strike zone but he called it both ways so it's hard to argue about it. I thought they did a great job for working the games by themselves.

The umpiring at the Signature Showcase seemed about the same as at most tournaments.

Some of the umpires were bad, some of the umpires were average and some of the umpires were good. About the same as you could say for the teams in attendance.

Some umpires made some poor judgement calls. Some of the coaches made some poor judgement calls.

Not all of the umpires knew the rules. Not all of the coaches knew all of the rules.

Umpires make mistakes and cost a team an out or a run or a game. Coaches make mistakes and cost a team an out or a run or a game. It is the nature or the beast.

My biggest issue was the fact that they recognized they made mistakes and still wouldnt correct it even when it was an immediate recognition...I have seen it all as well, good and bad but like someone else said..its the nature of the beast. Bad calls did potentially cost one game as well, lost by 1 in extra inning ITB but hey sometimes you just gotta beat the team and the umpire and FWIW it didnt seem to go both ways on the calls. Im not the coach nor would I blame the game on the blue to the girls at all. Sometimes you just have to adapt and overcome! Im a no excuses kind of guy just frustrating to watch for anyone that knows the rules and feels like people should hold themselves accountable right, wrong or indifferent.

I umpired this weekend . I was in charge of the umpires on 5 different fields . I would be interested in hearing what issues on which diamonds . If it involves any of the umpires that work with me we can try and fix it so we may be better the next time we cross paths ....thanks for any input .......FLASH

Yep you can't see them, those are the best when they just blend into the situations......

I may not make a lot of friends but, umpires are human and subject to good and bad days like the rest of us. Although they play a big part in a game, as a coach I could never attribute a loss or victory to them. If the girls did not adjust to the way the plate umpire was calling balls and strikes then the blame would lay squarely on my shoulders for not bringing it to their attention. If their was a blown call in the field, unless it was on the last play of the game that halted or allowed the winning score for either side, it was not the direct cause of the loss. Misplays, errors, a better opponent or an overall poor team performance were the likely causes of the loss. Have I always agreed with the umpires calls, certainly not. Have I argued my point on occasion, absolutely! Are there rotten umpires out there, sure. But, on a whole I have found that for the most part they try to give you their best and no matter how well they call the game someone will walk away dissatisfied.

There is such a thing as Umpire endurance,No, not trying to put up with umps!Umpires working extra games or working alone too many games. Basic tired umps.I started making it a habbit to slip a question in at tourments before our games. I asked the umps how many games have you worked today. If its 3 or 4 I know to expect lower quality during our game no matter how good the official is. 97F days and over 130F on turf makes for interesting games.
