Go to this link to see how mirrors can be used when teaching.

If you have ever been to our garage you will see how we use the mirrors to demonstrate our stance and when trying to get a point across to our hitters.

We have found it very helpful when working with our kids who have learning disabilities also. We say see it, feel it and then fix it.

An example of this is when you have a player that rolls the shoulder in too far. They stand in front of the mirror with the lead shoulder pointing towards the mirror and take the index finger of the lead hand and interlock it with the baby finger of the top hand and hold the ball in the top hand. Now have them load or go negative and then step to toe touch and separate the hands rearward...can you still see the ball in the mirror? If the ball is behind your head you will not be able to see it and you know you either rolled the shoulders away from the pitcher resulting in your head turning away also and not being able to get a good two eyed look on the ball. The elbows and hands did not go straight back but went around which is why you can no longer see the ball.

If you went back and that is straight back with the hands and the elbows you will still see the ball...think like you are drawing back on a bow string if you were shooting a bow and an arrow.

Another great drill is to have the hitter face the mirror with their lead shoulder pointing towards the mirror and then I stand behind them further back than an umpire would....this is to give them a view of what the pitcher looks like during her wind up or what we term dancing with the pitcher. As I start my up swing with the ball in my hand they start their load and when I get to the K position or the ball is at 12 o'clock or directly over my head we want them to be at toe touch and them I show them the ball at the pitchers window of release by the hip and then they swing. It give them a sense of timing and rhythm. You can even show them different grips on the ball to help them try to pick up on what is being thrown however the main focus is where to to when the pitcher is at their key points in their delivery...the pitcher never stops and we want the the hitter to dance with the pitcher and never stop either....just be on time.

The mirror is a powerful tool for teaching...in our opinion.
