Was there a rule change???

There is a school in Northeast Ohio whose AD told a parent that it was okay for her dd to practice with her travel team during HS softball season, as long as the coach wasn't the coach from her school. Any truth to that??

I am almost positive there were no changes made from last year, but, certainly I could be wrong. ;&

any bets on how many times the thread about playing/conflicts with a school team vs travel team pops up?

This subject was brought up around my area. Most of the travel teams here understand how much time school ball takes from a kid. I think there are coaches for school ball that will send notes or even call travel coaches and ask them/tell them that they want the school kids not to play and practice travel. I can't imagine putting a kid through a travel practice after 5 days a week of school practice, exam prep, and the rigors of being a student/kid. Ours just don't play travel during school ball. I never knew there was a rule though?

What are the "rules" in other states? Are the "rules" constitutional? Sounds like a lawsuit for a Supreme Court ruling in favor of personal liberties and rights vs. "The State".

Until someone from Ohio with a kid goes after Ohio in a Federal Court of law showing Ohio is keeping opportunities away from Ohio HS girls based on other states rules and regulations when it comes to other states that ALLOW girls to have NO regulations concerning playing in the off season... and connect it with federal dollars of scholarships... just figure on Ohio to keep on regulating the girls and continue to be allowed to be a "dinosaur" in the modern world.

Actually, this is probally one of the reasons that OHIO will never see a true to life GOLD team .. a team that can play softball 24/7/365.

I'll start one.. Does OHSAA overregulate your DD when it comes to sports?

Its all HS sports in Ohio that have this rule and a stupid one at that.
Our HS Coach finds out you practice with your Travel Team you are off the HS squad.

It could be as bad as Little League - could you imagine having to sit your ace pitcher for 4 days because she threw 85+ pitches? Or even just for 1 day for throwing 1 to 20 pitches? That would be a nightmare.

Can't complain if you don't want to make the effort to CHANGE things.

Bottom line.. OHSAA will continue to do it until so.

Wait until they get their regulation clutches on middle school ball. That will be coming soon. Wait and see.

I absolutely agree...there are a ton of girls out there that sit the bench during school ball that could use more practice - if they want it...

Yeh boys' teams have to have everyone on their team able to pitch for the most part because of the pitch counts in little league. The underhand pitch doesn't damage the shoulder and elbow like the over hand, so no need to restrict pitching...but you never know with OHSAA

What the AD was confused on or trying to tell the parent is: Players in the school season can still attend lessons with paid instructors who are not their travel coach.

OHSAA Rules are a pain but they are not the worst rules in our area. Check out the KY rules and report dates sometime. The other bonus for softball players is the spring season is the shortest high school season of them all. If anything, travel players/parents should unite on not allowing school programs to cut players off from travel earlier than they are allowed. School players are allowed to practice with their travel team until the first school board funded competition (scrimmage/game) which can happen no earlier than the second week of March.

Who would want thier DD playing any single sport 24/7/365 as your previous post suggested.

Next, you cannot compete on an outside team in California either.

Last, the rules do apply to middle school programs that are school sponsored.

Why would you even consider it reasonable to have your child practice and play the high school season, which for the most part is a six day a week commitment and in addition put extra time in with a travel situation. How about a life and or school work???

OHSAA seems to "push" schools to do the Saturday game thing on HS.. as it keeps travel teams from playing on Saturday. Take the Fall for example. Many travel teams would love to have the opportunity to play Fall weekend ball.. but can't due to HS commitments for this or that sports.

It's a shame as teams are losing out on either getting berths early or opportunities to play at for instance the Hall of Fame in Oklahoma. 14u teams are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Same with the 16u teams. I made provisions for the 16u teams to start late on Saturday so they can have their full roster for the qualifier... Instead of coming in piecemeal.

When I "paid" those law students with pizza and beer ( they were over 21) over Christmas break to look into what would have to be done by someone in Ohio .. it was their research that someone with a kid would haft to go after OHSAA in Federal Court.. showing the disparity of students from each state based on federal dollar sponsored scholarships. Obviously, if another state or ten doesn't have those regulations.. then the proof is there that our Ohio girls are being short changed compared to other girls in other states based on playing time allowed.

NCAA called Ohio a "dinosuar" in a conversation with me.

I can't help but believe them that it is true.

But, until the softballers start complaining to their State representatives and senators and find out who is on the Education Dept ( which OHSAA falls under) and complain to them as well.... quit griping and setting on the sidelines.

Because it will take the representatives and senators to change OHSAA.. as the AD filled board isn't going to.

Or a lawsuit.
