What to do when players miss too many practices

Re: What to do when players miss too many practice

Ok maybe before people start posting they should read ALL the posts! The main post is about a weaker player missing practices. This should not be tolerated. Not only does it hurt the girl but it hurts the team. When everyone else has been playing/practicing together 2-3 days a week and she misses she is going to fall behind. How would she learn the plays, signs, ect. if she never shows up. Not to mention the tension amoung parents who bust their a**es to get their daughters there no matter what.We have days that my dd leaves for school at 8 a.m. and doesn't get home until sometime after 9. Do we like that, no but that is the way things go sometimes. I don't think you should join a travel team without knowing what the coaches expectations are going to be for practices. If you can't meet those then don't play. Find a good old rec team or a less competitive one and play there.

As far as the Sunday posts the poster questioned missing for confirmation.....that is way different than missing just for Sunday services. Confirmation is a important part of these young girls lives. As long as a coach has Sunday morning practices he should be understanding. When was the last time you saw a high school event schedules for a Sunday morning? I am pretty sure that they even give that off. Luckily last year when my dd went through confirmation we had understanding coaches (he couldn't say much as his dd would miss Sat. games for JO volleyball and play....oops I mean start.... Sunday-that is a whole other ball of wax....) and confirmation teachers. We compromised as confirmation wasn't until Memorial day Sunday. We had tournament conflicts. She missed one Sunday of class and one a.m. game for class. They got a sub-player for her but she still played. Just not her normal amount. We were all fine with the decisions. Being confirmed and practicing should not even be in the same book let alone on the same page.

It's funny how people would see you at a game,at a practice say hi to you and your family and then go home make up a fake name and slam you on a forum!
You know this is still a kids game and as adults we should let them have"FUN" and let them play the girls will GEL just fine.

Brianna it sounds like you think that the original post was directed at you!! ?It sounds to me like you need to talk to your coaches if you are having a problem with the schedule. ?Maybe I am misinterpreting your post, but I'm sure that if your coaches have scheduled practices when they previously said there would be none, it is for the greater good of the team as a whole and they would understand if you missed one here and there.?Also, if you are all about "just having fun" ?then maybe rec ball is for you. ?Travel ball takes alot of dedication and hard work, not just individual work but TEAMWORK. ?Believe it or not, the girls are unable to get used to eachothers playing style (for lack of a better word) if you don't go to practice. ?As far as making up fake names, I would never do that, and I have already talked to the player on my team that the original post was about. >:(

LOL! Wow people are funny on here! I will start with, ?it appears that people DO takes things way to personal.

Now.. lets pay attention here.. it appears that some how 2 different threads have become combined here... one about practices in general and another with special circumstances! ?As far as practices go.. I fully agree that the team needs to practice together.. never said anything to dispute that! BUT.. coaches also need to give fair warning in advance.. and consider the fact if they do NOT want to have a practice and state that, and you make plans for your child, such as lessons (for softball) that are payed for in advance, they should have some understanding. Alot of facilities are pay in advance, non-refundable. And hey.. you thought no practice so you are trying to better your dd by getting these lessons!

Now on to the second topic (which is not even this thread). Church! Did I ever say that I go to church on Sundays, Saturdays, or any day??? NO! ?BUT, if my child was required to be there (and it is not missing a tournament) in order to make her Confirmation, she would be there. That is a once in a lifetime event.. its not like she is going to miss Sundays forever. It is a committment to make her Confirmation, not a committment that she go to church every Sunday at a certain time.

I will say that people need to lighten up! It appears to me that ALOT of people on here take things personal and seem to "view" things as they THINK they appear. Again, I think that alot of things on here don't necessarily give all the details to some situations and without that no one can be the judge.

wontyou - FIRST, I am not a child!!! I am an adult.. again a judgement based on a screen name. You are right my dd is on a travel team and WILL be at her games no matter what day of the week they are. My only comment to you is listen to your own advice...don't judge others! >:(

gottaluv - When I say "have fun", it can mean several things. My experience with multiple kids in sports is that if they are not enjoying, aka having fun, what they are doing then it becomes a chore and we all know that kids don't like chores. They will do them.. but it seems to take something away from it. And as for the fake name comment.. it was not directed at anyone in particular.. but I have been watching alot of it being done around the forum, sorry if you took it the wrong way. >:(

Whew.......politics and religion normally do not mix.......looks like neither does softball and religion....don't know why but this is the first topic on OFC I felt really uncomfortable reading.....will say this ......our team always gives a pass on school related activities and pretty sure our coaches like to sleep on Sunday mornings during the winter months.......summer ball hits tho everyone knows we hope to have a late Sunday morning game and play late into the day!

Re: What to do when players miss too many practice

I think the coach should find out what day and time is best for all and go from there. In todays world everyone is so busy with so many things it can be hard, but you cant please everyone all the time. If parents agree to practice time and day then there should be no excuse except sickness, death,or rare other.

The coaches have to juggle their time to help the team. When a parent or player makes too many excuses it is hard on the team. They are not really committed and should expect loss of playing time for their dd. However, in todays world coaches are struggling to have enough players since there are so many different teams and so few good players to go around. It kinda gives the leverage to the parents to do what they want when they want. But if they want their dd on a good team and want them to succeed at higher level they need to practice , practice , practice!

Practice,Practice,Practice I know a team that seems to practice alot but the girls are unhappy coaches daughter can do no wrong
and in that case the coach already knew who was where as a parent when your at a practice you can tell if things will gel
But as it was said before in this thread kids do play other sports and in a perfect world things would be great but as we all know nothing and nobody is perfect ;) ;) ;) [smiley=beer.gif]

Re: What to do when players miss too many practice

Our philosophy: Commit 110%. If you don't have the time...don't bother letting down the team. Example: kids, 1-15 year=300+ games, missed 3 practices total. One because of strept throat the other two beacuse of injured shoulder. One, 13 year old=150+ games, missed one practice because of sinus infection. It's called committment. Some have forgotten that if you play a team sport, that's exactly what it is...a team sport, everybody contributes equally(or should)

I have to say that i respect a coach who sits someone that hasn't been to practices. ?We have a coach that has a dd that didn't go to many practices so he sat her on the bench most of the tournament. ?That's a coach i respect.

Again, Thanks to all of you coaches that have given your honest opinion. For those of you that thought this post was put up for all to state what their coaches do wrong, it was not for that purpose. I guess I am not the only coach with players that have too many commitments.

Re: What to do when players miss too many practice

I have been following this thread from the beginning. I feel now is the time to respond to comments made about me, my team and how I run things. As a head coach with 2 assistants, We decide as a coaching staff when and how often to have practice, what will be covered at practice, and who will be starting in any games that we may play. I give equal opportunity to all of my players that give me their time and effort.

To Brianna 87, this thread was not from anyone on our team, or coaching staff and I do not appreciate the way you have bashed your Former team because you feel your dd was slighted. The fact is, we were being more than fair with the play time your dd got considering the amount of time she missed.

At no time were practices scheduled last minute or on Sunday mornings. As a coach I try to take everyones schedule into consideration. I even have practices at a field that is centrally located to everyone including myself (40 minutes from home). except for batting practice that was held at a place a little farther for some than others.

Sorry you feel so negatively. we still wish your dd all the best in her softball career and hope you find a team that will fit your schedule and be close to home for you. Maybe it is time you let by gones be by gones and focus on the future. Stop bashing our team and coaching.

Re: What to do when players miss too many practice

Wait a minute, you said before she was one of your weaker players, why would you worry about that? ?Make her rear sit on the bench if she doesn't come to practice. ?Even if she was your best player and all the other girls were not as fantastic and did not go to practice. ?Believe me, "FRIENDS BALL" is worse than daddy ball!! ?
