I have no idea what I would do but some food for thought.

I let my 12U catcher and pitcher call games at times. Especially in the Fall and against teams we were much better than.

At 14U my catchers and pitchers know that I like the game to keep moving so if I am not on the bucket due to other reasons they are to get calling the game.

At the end of the day the players play. A 16U pitcher that has any D1 colleges looking at her (any D1 team, remember we are talking about 300-total pitchers in the country pitch at that level) she does not "need" Daddy calling pitches. He just wants/needs to be involved.

I would advise him that she is welcome on the team but that the pitchers and catchers call most games and that when in doubt I call the pitches. NO way after thinking about this do I allow any pitchers Dad at this level to be calling pitches. It is just ridiculous.

Seems that the assumption is that the Dad is difficult. But what if he's not? It almost sounds like coaches don't want to give up control. What if the Dad is really good at calling pitches? Can it possibly work?

If your catcher isn't calling pitches by 16u Gold level, you may need to find a catcher capable of catching this stud first.

but rarely will you ever find a top level college program that has the catcher calling the pitches.

Let's see.........the only way HIS dd plays on YOUR team is that HE MUST call her pitches. There is no way your team is good enough for his dd any other way. For some reason he doesn't want to deal with some very good PA teams, probably due to wearing out his welcome. If he was that damn good he would have his own team in a successful program. The situation doesn't pass the smell test.

The original question was not "Top Level College Team". You can't change the original question or the level of competition 3 pages into the thread. 16u Gold teams should and normally do have catchers calling pitches.

I didn't change anything. He stated that they should be calling pitches because/ What is the girl going to do when she gets to college? The answer: The pitching coach will be calling the pitches. You stated that 16U gold teams SHOULD have their catchers calling pitches. Some do, some don't. The Southern Cal A's don't have their catchers calling the game and they are the PGF 16U Champions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIdIyte_Bts You can watch it here. The Bandits catcher does call her pitches. Like I said, some do, some don't.

Well, I'm quite familure with a certain college team that made the NCAA and yes the freshmen catcher called 90% + of the games! Also, I know at least a half dozen other D-1 catchers that call there own games. On a side note, when I was an assistant coach for the Lasers White back in I think 2008 we had a 15U pitcher from the Youngstown area who had played for an organization called Valley Sting tryout for us. She was the real deal, but her dad had made a couple of comments like he should catch her during tryouts because she had incredible spin and our catchers might not be able to handle it...LMAO. Anyway we politely passed on her and never saw her on the high level circuit after that.

As for whether I would give in to the demands of a stud players dad wanting to call her pitches...no I would politely pass. I would not be willing to tamper with team chemistry, and I certainly would not, as someone suggested if he was really good, allow him to call my other pitchers pitches...he would not have there best interest at heart...bottom line!

I forgot all about that pitcher. Mom was not sure the catcher we had who was catching a D1 college pitcher at that moment could catch her daughter. We could not get away fast enough and my guess is many others including colleges had the same thought. Great memory Bink.

Lee - it probably helped that your team was absolutely loaded with D1 talent and you didn't have to make this decision.
I've seen some great Lasers teams but White and Aqua were probably the two best. Those days were a blast to watch.

Another thread got me wondering if this had happened recently. Pitchers dad is listed as a coach for a top level program not in Ohio.

Scenario: You are the coach of a second year 16U Gold team. You are very successful having finished top three in most tournaments in Ohio and top 20 when going out west. A pitcher shows up at your tryout. Not just any pitcher, the #1 pitcher from Pennsylvania that is being sought out by most SEC schools. She wants to join your team. This girl could take your team to a new level. The only issue is that her Dad says he has to call her pitches. He seems very nice and explains that he knows her better than anyone. He explains that he will never tell you when to play her and she can play other positions as you need. Do you allow her on your team and let Dad call her pitches? Do you send her away to another team?
It sounds like that your team or someone you know may have experienced this situation . Im curious what was the decision for this demand?
