I have asked a minimum of ten people this question and the answers are pretty split.

When does an 8th grader fall into the "school ball vs non-school ball" rule?

For example, The team that I coach is full of 8th graders that do not play middle school ball. I have also coached this group in the fall. This fall, they will be freshman.

Here's the question that I can't seem to get the answer to.... when are these players considered HS softball players? Is it when they enter HS or is it when they play for the school team in the spring?

Thanks

they are high school players when they enter the 9th grade. which would be this coming fall.
check page 32 of 2018 OHSAA Softball manual.

How are players ‘considered’ when Middle School/Junior High players play with High School players in the off-season? Answer: Players are considered middle school/junior high until August 1 of their 9th grade year and are considered separate as it relates to participating on non-interscholastic teams. For example; 4- 8 th graders could participate on a “Club” (non-interscholastic) team along with 4- 9 th graders from the same school. They are considered separate. D

I thought it was once they actually made the high school team and participated in a game or scrimmage. As for school ball vs non-school ball for 8th graders, it depends on who is paying. It is considered a school team if the school sponsors and pays some of the fees.

So a travel team forms August 1 2017 comprised of 5 players from the same HS. Each try out for and make the HS softball team and play the following spring their freshman year. Summer rolls around.

Are they still able to play together on the travel team and be eligible next school season?

I know rules state there is no 50% limit between May 26 - July 31.
But they can continue past July 31 if they are competing in a national championship.

If I understand this just eliminates any fall tournaments from being played.

The answer to that is yes, you're correct. They cannot legally play together past 7/31.

For those keeping score...... I heard back from OHSAA and was told that, since the girls haven't (and won't have) played for a school team, they do not count towards the 50% rule.

I think OSHAA needs to read their own rule book.
