When is it OK to miss a game/day?

Hoping coaches & parents understand that Softball although it dictates our summers and falls depending on your commitment and Springs depending on your age, is NOT the most important thing in our lives. That being said, I'm wondering what situations would OFC Coaches & Parents actually encourage or allow their players/dd to take a Tourament DAY-OFF, meaning she would miss at least 1 game if not the entire day, because SOMETHING is more important to "her" in the grand scheme of things for that day.

I will add a Survey to this thread as my example that I will wrestle with from now until June 3rd making up my mind as to what is "right" priority for that day/weekend/season.

Unless it was academic related or a funeral of a relative I would expect my DD to be there for all games. My brother passed away this past Summer and on the way home from Indy we stopped and dropped off my DD at SB practice. I guess you can say we are a little committed to the game/team.

good question to discuss. My dd took off a game on one day, a Monday (we somehow unexpectedly ended up playing on July 4th AM) and missed the following Friday's game to attend a REACH church camp. She loved it so much she really did'nt want to come home. Traveled from Indianapolis event to eastern Virginia back to Columbus for another tournie without coming home.

What I wish for from coach's that travel a bunch (any college exp Team) is that in that 12 week period from June 1 to Mid August you simple schedule some weekends off. That should'nt harm anyone. These tournies are starting on Friday so it's gone 3-5 days a week (one for practice) for nearly 3 months. IMO you give 2 weekends off in that time period you will have happier players (and much happier parents ) good topic

All emergencies, weddings, and when your team faces mine...:lmao:

For my team, we just request advance warning to plan accordingly.

As competitive as we are we still want them to be kids. There are limits to everything... Never had anyone push us to find out what that limit is.

Bouldersdad, I'm sure your right about Prom and Homecoming being an issue with the DD. Mines a little too young for that yet, but as mentioned many times on OFC once they are driving/dating etc things do change a bit.

My Wife's B-Day is becoming a date I'm thinking of BLOCKING out. Having sat at Akron U Showcase twice all day on her B-Day, was not the smartest decision.

Thinking it should pay huge dividends to have the family nowhere near a softball field on her B-Day. LOL

Im not quite sure if the issue lays more with the dd or the dw but either one by themselves is tough enough, combined it is paramount to having a root canal preformed anally...;)

I think it literally depends on the dd. I have the tale of 2 worlds.

My oldest, if she played traver, believes that homecoming, prom, etc is important and softball isn't. I'd support her in her decision. I don't have to worry about the doghouse for those events :yahoo:. HOWEVER, if a Justin Beaver concert, all bets are off. Normally most coaches get the schedule out before that announcement when his coming to the area. However, I would contact the coach concerning the schedule, if by chance, the announcement for the concert is first.

My youngest on the other hand lives, breathes, and eats softball. All bets are off. I'm sacrificing to get her the lessons needed to help her achieve her dreams, she's going to sacrifice as well. That's what the "off-season" is for.

Tell me about it. However, somethings don't have second chances. I hope the beiber fever is over by Summer.. PLEASE! Thinking of getting my own Headphones too, the ones ground crew at airport wear. lol

This is a question I always had.... Why is it more important to have Mother's Day weekend off but the same respect is not paid during Father's Day weekend?

Sounds sexist to me :lmao:

It should not be an issue for that one day and I would expect her to tell the coach and also expect to sit part of Sunday. It's a choice she will need to make. Life's full of them, all learning ones.....

Send the dd with the team and you take your wife out for her b-day, dont see how a parental b-day is a reason for a kid to miss a softball game? Am I missing something here?

EXACTLY! Honestly, I don't care, but had that question asked to me a couple years ago.

When you get to the high school age there are several reasons they need to miss a game or even a day. Siblings graduation, some teams don't even start summer schedule until after graduations. Homecoming, usually kids go to different schools so they are on different weekends. ACT/SAT, We had to get a couple subs last year because of testing in the morning, but they were back for the afternoon games. Had some miss for church camps and cheer camps, because it was manditory or they were off the high school squad. The one I don't completely understand is family vacations. If you committ to a travel team why would you plan your family vacation in the middle of travel season. Justs shows that life happens off of the softball field!

I can state this, dd is not permitted per team rules to miss a weekend for Home Coming, Prom, or any other miscellaneous dance.
Permissable Misses:
1. ACT/SAT
2. Official Visit
3. Medical Reasons
4. Death in the Family
5. Injured
6. Pregnancy
7. College Camps
8. School required functions
9. Maybe Senior Prom or Home Coming
