Thank you!

My oldest moved in with us when she was 16. She was playing ball year round before that. On top of that her mother had her in nearly everything from so**er to basketball. She told me she was just burned out meanwhile She had OSU pursuing her pretty hard. I let her quit. Now that she is 20. She regrets it more than ever. She threw away that scholarship for what?
Now we have an 11 year old, with a huge ceiling of potential. If she told me she wanted to quit. I'm not sure I'd let her. It's not about the money we spend on lessons or traveling, but more about when she is 30 and looking back and wondering what if I would have stayed. Would I have been one of the greats?
Our 8 year old is just getting into the love of the game as well. We let them decide initially if this is for them.
I think we are too easy on our kids and let them do whatever "they decide." Do I get burned out? Heck yes. Honestly, there are days I say to myself. I just want this to be over. But deep down, I wouldn't change it for the world. I get to spend a ton of time with my girls and I may be selfish in doing that, but it's time I'll never get back.

I agree with jdcii, our kids are smart but they dont know what they think they know. They need us thats why we are the parents to help them make some decisions. And if we let them actually QUIT then shame on us. A break is needed yes but to let them quit because they want to be intersted in "boys" or other unproductive things then thats just a stupid parent. If they stay active and do other things thats fine to quit softball too. Just dont quit to be a bum,, because they dont know everything yet parents. My DD is 12 by the way...

You will see in their eyes/actions/emotions/enthusiasm IF the need to call it quits is there. I'd recommend treading pretty softly when evalauting anyone's parenting skills when a player decides to quit. Tons of factors that are going on behind the scenes may be at play. I've been there . MD

Making a kid play ball when the want isnt there is like tunneling thru a mountain with your forehead. You will discover what so many have when they reach the age of driving, boyfriends and jobs... alot of times softball takes a back seat to life.

Like Ive always said , there are ball players and there are kids that play ball. The secret is to be smart enough to know which one your dd is and support her in what she wants.

We have always taken time off from softball for 2 months every year. I believe this is healthy. It allows time to relax. Having your head in the right place is just as important as making sure your body is healthy. Besides, softball ends eventually even with the best of players. We need to teach that there are other things in life more important than being on a ball field.

Tim,
I agree...we as a team always take the Fall off up until the end of December...whats funny is we get constant calls from the girls wanting to know if they could get tunnel time, set up workout times, etc...not all the girls do this but many do.....the "players" are self motivated....the ones moving on are the ones who ask for cash to hit the cages....look on here for opportunities to sub, work on their game because thats what they want and love to do.....mine says she needs to be stronger and faster for the college game so she goes to the Y quite often and hits weights and works on agility....I don't push that...it comes from within.....I enjoy the "break" more than she does I can assure you...lol

Agreed Tim, Heres what i have seen and think the top 5 reasons girls stop playing, and 2 of them hurt.

#1 reason girls stop playing: BOYFRIENDS
#2 reason girls stop playing: THEIR PARENTS ARE OUT OF CONTROL AND AN EMBARASSMENT TO THEM
#3 reason girls stop playing: WORK
#4 reason girls stop playing: LOST THE PASSION FOR THE GAME
#5 reason girls stop playing: THEY RELIZE THEY ARE NOT AS GOOD OF A PLAYER THAT THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE.

What a sign of the times.........it's TOUGH being a student athlete these days.
We tend to lose sight of that when a kid misses a single practice and we are ready to jump down their throats! EVERYONE should read these posts and understand the pressure these kids now face. Sure isn't like when I played 20 yrs. ago......
