Which foot to use to cover first on a bunt

Got a question for you softball experts, I was asked what foot the second baseman should put on the bag at first when covering first base on a bunt, I answered I never thought about it but since you named it this is what I think. use the left foot, in my opinion it will be faster then using the right even though you lose some reach by doing it. I want to know which foot and why that foot.

I personally teach my girls to cover with the right foot for a righty, and left foot for a lefty, just as you would if you were a first baseman, that way they have the ability to move for a bad throw, and still keep their foot on the bag. Anyone that uses the teachings of Howard Kobata will use this method. But....if they are late getting to the bag, use whichever foot they need to get the out.

Even though I teach Howard's methods, I also teach to use the left foot. I tell the second basemen that if they get there in plenty of time, that it's best to use the right foot, but otherwise go ahead and use the left. Also, since many of the throws are coming from near home plate, using the left foot gives the second baseman some extra space to help create a throwing lane.

I always teach left foot to create the throwing lane for any bunt close to home plate. The fielder covering first is in a better athletic stance to make a play on a shaky throw.

Left foot for the throw from home or anywhere in the infield area of the pitcher or third. That gives the thrower a great target on the inside of the field and unobstructed view as well as the runner is on the other side of the line.

Use the left foot, in my opinion if you get to the base with your left foot first you would have to take another step with your right to get it on the bag and then another step to make the stretch. if you have the time to do all of that they never will run out a bunt anyway.

The side of the second baseman's left foot should be pressed against the side of the base. This allows the fielder to move easily for an errant throw and it keeps her from getting stepped on because her foot is not on top of any portion of the base. This is the best and safest way in baseball and in softball. Knees bent, prepared to go left, right, up or down, foot against the side of the base-- and step toward the infield quickly after catching the ball to avoid a collision. If she gets there in time, she can try to press her foot against the front inside corner of the bag to allow a stretch toward home. Do not step on top of the base.
