I have noticed an influx of new organizations and programs for girls fastpitch softball in Ohio and I am asking myself why? I think there are lot's of excellent options for players on teams and organizations from rec, community, regional teams, and national teams that will get girls prepared to play at whatever level their ability will take them ( DI,DII, DIII, NAIA,). It just seems like we now have so many teams and organizations and it is hurting the game. Am I missing something here but why start an entire new organization when there are excellent ones already to choose from?

Right over here!
I think that answer is simple, yet highly unpopular. Not everyone can play at the highest level. In addition agendas play a huge role. Most new teams, other then mergers to higher level competition, are a direct result of someone thinking they can do it better.

When you see Uncle Bills waterbed emporium platinum elite premier, odds are its not a high level collegiate preparatory program.

Just curious...
How do you believe that having additional team or organization options are hurting the game? From my experience the playing market generally will dictate if new teams or organizations are sustainable. If they can field a team or teams there are leagues and tournaments that will accept them...
If the team fails there are other teams always looking to pick up players constantly and, If the team does good there are...bigger/stronger organizations that "will be looking to pick them up or, at least their better players"...

If a team or organization thinks the sport growing in teams hurts them in their ability to field competitive teams, that is more of a reflection of those teams than the start up of a new team IMO...

Mike, I don't think everyone can fit on those teams and orgs.I believe after folks watch a season on this season's team they realize what they really need for there dd's.I also believe orgs a evolving to provide more for there players ,training w recognized instructors, strength and conditioning.Others are refining there teams to compete at higher levels quality vs quantity.I think this question gets asked every year Allways a good topic.

I'm not sure a growing interest in a sport is hurting the game. I do agree that finding an existing org. (especially one that hosts tournaments) is a great way to go. At the younger levels, they are still weeding out the players who don't have the commitment and I can understand more org.'s due to more popularity. With the older aged players, finding a good org. with the right coach and a coach that chooses the tournaments that fit the player and the family of the player is another factor. Indoor facilities in winter play a large role in Ohio. Some players look for teams that have practices that fit into their schedule. If it's a qualified coach, I don't think being a new organization is much of a factor. As for playing at the level of a players skills coming into play in regards to taking them to a certain level in college, I have to argue that some players specifically look for smaller schools. Not every player with "DI" talent wants to play at a large university. There are DI programs that have had very little success that could get beat by a DII school. It's all in what the player wants and what fits. I see your point of view but I am extremely happy with how popular the sport has become in the last several years.

How many organizations can you think of, who are no longer around - from just 5 years ago?
Many organizations put a good set of leaders or directors in place & they manage to survive........But many, once a Coach or Director has went thru the age groups with his DD are done & so falls that organization. If it wasn't for the "Circle of Life" there would not be places for many to play!
The same organizations that many recommend now a days, are the same ones who were being asked "Why are you starting another organization" just 5-10 years ago.........

Good points. Thanks I appreciate everyone's perspective on this. I am an old timer with my last of three playing so things have changed a lot and much of it for the better. Good luck everyone at Nationals, Tryouts and next year.

With all of these new organizations, why is it that posters still post "XYZ DOB, XYZ position, looking for XYZ" in individual threads? Wouldn't it be easier to just educate yourself on organizations and see what is the best fit?

I guess its nice to be wanted...
When you go fishing you need to bait the hook...Look at how many coaches jump on those post for a private tryout, invite to practice etc. Heck, come late October I bet some get offers without even trying out...
