Dave:

Tidal Waves 95 is not the team that qualified at Shreve. The team that qualified is Tidal Waves 94.

BTW, we are in your pool. So we shall be seeing a lot of each other in the next 10 days, unless one of our teams qualifies this weekend.

The latest email from Jim Welch to the coaches...

Coaches -

Sorry for the delay but I have been working hard to meet everyone's request
as best as possible and keep the games spaced with time to move from one
field to the next. I have moved as much as I can to Friday with the
availability of fields and so on.

Some pools have changed with the loss of four teams so make sure that you
toss the old schedule and start over with the proper code. I also jammed
some of the winner's bracket games in bracket play in the middle of the
sequence the bracket says you are supposed to play them so that we can end a
lot earlier this year on Sunday than last year.

Double check everything as I was up till 2:00AM working on this and I have
made mistakes in the past.

Sheet 2 of the spreadsheet is the schedule. Sheet 3 is the pools you are
in. Field designations are as follows:

MD = Marathon Diamonds

VB = Van Buren Sports Complex

FHS = Findlay High School

Cooper = Softball field in Findlay, OH

Rawson = Softball field in Findlay, OH

Riverside = Softball field in Findlay, OH

For those of you who have never been to Findlay; we are a community of
40,000 people along I-75 40 minutes south of Toledo, Oh and 90+ minutes
north of Dayton, OH. You can make to one side of town to the other in all
directions in 10 minutes or less. Van Buren is a small town 1 exit north of
Findlay and is 6 minutes from the Marathon Diamonds. Van Buren, Marathon
Diamonds and Findlay High School are all located in three consecutive exits
within 10 minutes of each other and right off the highway. Your travel from
one complex to the other is very limited. I have included an aerial photo
of the Marathon Diamonds above as well.

This is a championship play tournament and all ASA rules have to be
followed. So make sure you have the little things in check like matching
uniforms and hair ties and chin straps and all the little things that drive
us coach's nuts but the umpires will make sure we follow. Warren will be
here this weekend and so will 3 other ASA Commissioners making sure the umps
are enforcing the rules. Steel cleats are allowed all weekend at all
locations.

Game time for all pool play games is 1 hour and 40 minutes. No new inning
will begin after the time limit unless you are tied. We must have a winner
in these games and you must play these games to be eligible to play in the
bracket play. There are 2 hours in between each game to allow for
maintenance to touch up the fields. Please have your teams ready to play 15
minutes before game time so we can start early if teams, field and umps are
all ready to go.

Some rules that you need to know about our complexes

1. No smoking allowed
2. Coolers are only aloud in the complex for team players
3. No animals aloud.
4. Sportsmanship is a must amongst fans and teams towards each other,
visitors, staff and umpires.

Check in will start at 10:00am and you must check in before your first game.
Check in will be at the Marathon Diamonds even if you are playing on another
field. If you play Friday first get checked in ASAP. Roger Zorn will be
checking teams in. You must have the following. ASA Roster, ASA Sanction
number, ACE Certification number, copy of insurance and copies of birth
certificates. If you need your information back at the conclusion of the
tournament please let Roger know. We will be keeping them in our hands
during the tournament.

There is a gate fee for the tournament. $5 a day or $10 for a weekend pass.
4 days so weekend pass is definitely the best way to go. Make sure you let
your parents know.

Programs will be available at the fields for you to get. All though we
didn't get every team this year but the cutoff we have a 36 page program.
That's awesome so grab one for $5 and take advantage of the many restaurant
deals from our sponsors. Especially the coaches eat free with bringing in
the team deals from Olive Garden, Texas Roadhouse and more. You have to
have the program to get your free meals.

There are some really good deals in there! We did everything we could think
of this year to minimize cost to you the coaches and your parents so they
can sit back and enjoy softball. Hope it helps.

Our maintenance guys and gals are volunteers and will be doing there best to
accommodate each team. If you notice something please ask them to correct
it or get with me and I will make sure it does happen. We thank you all for
making this the largest single division tournament in Ohio again in 2011.
We hope you enjoy the area and our sports complexes and good luck to all of
you.

Any questions please let me know.

Thanks.

How do we end up in each others pools in two straight qualifiers? Happened last year with us with Doom 96 too! Take it easy on us!

So do we get re-pooled again after the results of today for states?

Hope not Murph! We are looking forward to a rematch.

And with all pools having had three teams, I would think that rescheduling everything now to account for HoO Explosion not being in the tournament would result in two four-team pools, which would have its own set of problems.

BUT, if there is going to be a re-scheduling, we do indeed need to know pronto. I'm going ask Ted to send an email to Jim Welch, who has been extremely professional and courteous about this issue of berth holders not being allowed to play in ASA 16u States, asking whether there is any risk of the pool play schedules being changed. If you guys do the same, I'm sure that we will get quick answers from Mr. Welch.

Warrens decree has had a major impact on this tournament. I am sure that HOh Explosions does not mind taking the week off.. but.. do they forgo their fee or does ASA return their fee in its entirety? This will affect 3 other teams as well. Just curious

Actually, Johnnies, I believe that the HoO players are very disappointed that they can't play States. I think some of them definitely had college coaches who were coming to see them. It is of course a "good" problem to have but I have it on good authority that more than one player was willing to forfeit the berth and enter ASA 16u States, on the theory that they wanted to play in front of the college coaches and that they would have a very decent shot at re-qualifying through States.

As to refunds, I can't see how the tournament can refuse a full refund for each of the teams that has been forced to a "forfeit the berth or be excluded from the tournament" rule.

What? Does that mean all the other teams can play States as well? Because the schedule would definitely be changed if all those teams are allowed in.

This is way past silly. The tournament starts in four days and there has already been a round of changes caused by the last announcement that existing berth holders could not play. If I am the coach of McMadness Black, Tidal Waves 94, or Lasers Scarlett, I'm wondering why my team can't also now enter. What in the world is going on . . . and what do the rest of the coaches say to their families if pool games are changed yet again, perhaps even to include Thursday games that were not on the schedule just a few days ago?

That would contradict the instructions that Warren issued for all teams that won a berth, and that would include the explosions. Why would it make any difference with this team? Anyone?

Wasnt the schedule done over to accomodate the 3 teams that had to withdraw due to winning a USA/USA berth? What makes it any difference now?

If Jim and Roger have any hair, I'm sure that they have pulled it all out after this last week.

I would like to see ALL teams in... Having games moved to Thursday afternoon does create some problems.

First pool was great in my opinion our girls were looking FWD to playing on Friday vs. Lasers Scarlet and Tidal-waves... no offense to Stingrays or Hawks the Stingrays looked good at MCH and will be ready to play...

I too would like to see everyone in, as I think I have made clear from the beginning. If we get knocked out by a team that already has a berth, so be it. But at this point, whatever is decided, it should not involve changing the first date and place for pool games. If it does involve changes, Ted and I may have to hire a security firm to protect us in our own house. Our parents are very patient, but they do have their careers and other aspects of their personal lives to manage.

And let me stress again that Jim Welch has been amazingly professional and courteous through this whole thing, which has cost him lots of hours in rescheduling.

It occurs to me how far things have come in five short years. In 2006, my team (with Ted on board as a coach and cgs our biggest supporter) won a berth at 16-U the weekend before ASA State, so we had to drop out of States, which we knew about for months. But the funny thing is that with us dropping out, that left something like 4 teams. Two of those dropped out and it left two teams.

Of those two teams, I think one didn't show or was way overmatched or something like that and Ron Poole's Ice found itself with a berth to ASA Nats!

Back then, NSA still had around 40-60 teams playing its State in each age division. NSA was in the early stages of its rapid decline, but still a force.

It is satisfying to know that our team was one of several during the 2000's to have helped push today's Ohio teams forward to compete with the best.

Not sure about that. I think we are in the process of cancelling hotel rooms and looking for another tournament but I can't speak for the coaching staff or TD.

If I am reading your team affiliation correctly, you have had a USA/ASA berth since last August and no one told you that means you couldn't play ASA States. And you certainly couldn't have read about it earlier, because none of these Local Association Ohio Rules are published anywhere.

CGS - I guess I shouldn't travel for 3 weeks and try to catch up on OFC on Monday - I miss all the fun.

This quote is so ironic when I compare it to the one email I got from Warren Jones on June 2 asking about getting Ohio rules on berths in writing (the question was about ERQ berths - I just wasn't thinking big enough.)

Mark I think I understand your request and we do have rules that we go by. As of right now it?s a very busy time but I will get this posted on our web site when I get the time. In the meantime if you have question please call me and I will explain. As Mr. Dooley explain to you it?s up to the head of each association as to how the teams advance to tournaments. As of the past 5 years I have not heard of any problems. Thanks for your concerns.

Warren Jones
Ohio State Commissioner

Maybe it is time for a leadership change in Ohio - or possibly a boycott of ASA qualifiers next year. Can NSA step up and fill the void? They have been spanked successfully in Ohio for a few years, maybe THEY are ready to listen...

I didn't take the time to read the entire thread but let me clarify two things
1. We were NEVER told that we could play at States after securing a berth. SBFamily I'm not sure where you got that info. We spoke to Warren Jones yesterday to be clear.
2. Absolutely we're disappointed that we won't be at States but we're more excited to go to USA and are already working on replacing the next two weekends.
