Rec ball over travel ball?

I caught some flack at times for my policy noted in the previous thread (partially due to bad choice of words) and also got some good feed back. Well, I'm lovin' it now... if you want to play for me... no rec ball... clean and no drama!

I still think that is a mistake at the 10U level, those kids have to play and play some more. Most 10U teams dont have a loaded schedule. But its your team and your rules, like I had said before in that post, I wouldnt have my DD play for a team with some kind of governing rules that dictated what they did outside of the travel team, thats my job not yours. If you had an attendence rule regarding the travel team that is something entirely different.

All that being said, if those rules work for you and your team who am I to judge lol.

Uber, thanks! I love your feedback and respect your position.

In general, we don't have or run lots of policies on our 10u team (policies in general- probably another topic or thread). In fact, I don't have any other policy that is "mandatory" or conflicting. I'd like to think I'm a different coach but won't get into that now. If playing 10 more rec games at a much lower level is what someone is missing, then our 50-60+ season isn't for them. They are missing the point. I struggle with playing too many games at 10u being harmful just as the rec vs travel situation so well discussed on this thread. We are definitely loaded between league play (which I have issues playing teams that are not challenging us due to the league setup), 8-10 tourneys, and a WS trip to Florida and to play at a better/higher level... recreational "issues" don't fit.

Ahhhh you hit something there not mentioned before or that I didnt see before..LEAGUE PLAY...if your team is playing in a league there really is no need for a kid to play for any other team. Her dance card is full lol, My DD never played for a Travel team that also played in a league, I think that puts a different spin on it.

sorry if I mislead you Uber.

I know rec has a place and it's a good place. I enjoy watching other family members play for their local teams. It's nice to be able to go to a game and actually sit back and relax! Many of you can relate. There are lots of wonderful people that coach those teams and many have great players too... some of the great players just don't want to play year round so they can play s0quer, swim, volleyball, or b-ball or whatever. No beef with rec.

Well put.
We don't actually tell our players they can't play rec just tell them that we must come first to accomplish what we are trying to do. We address this from day one and re address it over the winter. We are very clear about it. We do have a couple girls playing rec. ball and they attend our practices over any rec games or such so not really a problem.

Listen up! You CANNOT and SHOULD NOT put Rec ball and Tournament ball in the same category. REC is for learning how to play the game. TOURNAMENT is for the talented young ladies who have the game down. DON'T PLAY REC BALL IF YOU PLAY ON A TOURNAMENT TEAM!!!!! You may think you're daughter is getting practice but it is only hurting her and her team when she gets to a tourney and her mindset is for REC ball.
Plus, the tournament team never gets to practice as TEAM, because REC ball gets in the way.

What do you chose if a kid is playing both when there is a conflict?

Easy!!! Play one or the other. Your daughter is not getting any benefit out of playing on a rec team when she is on a tournament team. How much did you pay for REC vs TOURNAMENT.

Haveaclue has a clue. You need to play up not down to get better.

My DD is a pitcher and plays both. Her rec ball coach understands that travel comes first, mostly because is oldest plays travel. The problem that we run into is the amount of pressure put on my DD by the other players and parents because the rest of the team is so young. We have a lot of first year players on the team and my DD feels like she lets the team down if she walks a batter or lets a run score. Luckily we only lost 1 game in her rec ball league and it was to a travel team that plays rec ball also. We left the decision of playing rec ball up to her. She loves the game and can't get enough of it. What is most discouraging to her is that she works her tail off and with the exception of 2 or 3 of the girls on her rec team, she dose not see the effort from the other girls. Don't know how many times this year that we went into the back yard and batted for 30min. to an hour after she just played 3 games because something didn't feel right with her swing. Again, not our decision, hers. She enjoys being around the other girls, but has already decided that this her last year of rec ball.

Ahhh... those rec ball terrorists...

It is comical once a quarter to read these posts from you professional travel geniouses on how your girls will be ruined for life when allowed to mingle with the minions...

Get a life. There are MANY 100% rec teams that can beat you...

I?ve seen kids miss games and practice for a lot worse reasons than playing rec ball.

I guess the globetrotters get beat once and while too... Just stirrin the pot...

I too understand that plenty of rec ball teams can come to whoop some tail...

I understand that there are some good rec ball teams but most good rec ball teams have some travel ball players on them except on your younger ages 10U/ "A league"
it only takes a good pitcher and a girl that can catch her.
