Come back when your talking about last year 14's and 16's not saying there aren't exceptions. What happens is one of the better core players leave to play on a more well known team like the lasers, the team that has the core group isn't able to replace her with a equal player and the slide begins. It happens every year without exception. Teams get complacent, players get complacent. Again, not talking your specific team LOL, I know there are going to be all kinds of posts to the contrary people talking about their 10u or 12u teams, but I want to hear from people in softball hot zones who are 16's and have 7 or 8 core players together since 10 or 11u AND run with the big dogs. Not the local B tournament kings. I want to know how its done, that's all :) , everybody these days has 11,12,13,14 u teams that's nothing new, keeping them together is. CGS is probably one of the smartest people on OFC, I was looking for advice from her LOL

Only time will tell ..

I like your tag line btw... Those Who Stay Will Be Champions!

My point exactly ... I tell my players and parents that they are part of something special and they will be Champions if they stay at it as a team.

Why will they be champions if they stay at it as a team? What if you realize a team needs a better #1 pitcher to compete with the best teams? Do go and get one? Even if that means a core starter 3 years with the team finds herself go from starter to bench warmer?

BTW that's a Bo line, talking about when he took over @ Michigan and referring to the mass Exodus that followed his arrival.

Yep - they went from about 150 to around 70 players.. I remember that.

Answer is Yes... but, no spots are guarenteed amd as hard as they work at it now, it will be tough to beat them out... all winter they practiced 2 hrs on wed and 3 hrs on Sunday .. we rarely had less than 8 of 10 show - even though it was optional ...

that is 99% of the Doom 95 success - their pitcher is so good, they just continue to improve around her .. got to have the #1 stud - that I agree with.. so far KK continues to hold that end up for us - she busts hers and I have no reason to think that she will not follow the same course Emily A has set for her team .. but it just takes one team implosion and it all goes up in smoke...

Yeah, it all depends on what the Coach/Team's commitment is. Is it Excellence at the highest levels, or simply improving week in and out, or if it's about Loyalty to Team Familes AND ALL are respectable, but a team can have only 1 VISION and as long as that vision is managed then everyone should KNOW what to expect year in and out as well as week in/out.

EG: Don't tell your families your goal is to seriously compete or finish top10 at ASA/NATs but then not be willing to instruct, train, or upgrade players as needed. Likewise, don't tell TEAM it's all about the Family and then kill them training for ASA/USA run and upgrading kids all the way up until June.

SAY WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO, AND DO THAT! NOBODY SHOULD COMPLAIN. They will, but you are covered. LOL!

see here is where I get stuck, I don't follow any of the younger teams so I have no idea about the Doom 95 LOL, but anyways I get stuck on how coaches and organizations tell kids and parents we need to stay together to win, in essence most are saying we want our top players to stay while we look to improve our roster during tryouts. I tell all young players and parents new to fastpitch, your not signing a lifetime contract. Always honor your 1 year commitment, examine at the end of the year, is this team playing the type of tournaments I want to play in? That could be either to much travel, not enough challenge etc., am I happy where I am playing? Am I having fun etc. The reason for this attitude is I believe coaches examine their team going into tryouts players should do the same. BTW my oldest played with a core group for 4 years, as they got older we were able to do less or weren't at 100%, kids started getting into other things and concentrating on other sports, it became easier for them to miss things because of the comfort level and the fact this wasn't their first priority. Yes at 12 u we practiced at our indoor facility 2 days a week, we had great turnouts by 15u the turnout was basically the same 4 kids, so we went to the Lasers were they had an average of 10 kids a Practice. Now with the SGS Magic white a team of 7 D1 signed players, 3 D2 signed players turnouts for winter Practice is very impressive, these kids come from Lasers, Peppers, Finesse

Uber makes a great point. I have only been involved with travel softball for 3 years but I have learned it is the ultimate system of free agency. Everyone plays on a 1 year cycle and around July you start to hear the wispers of "where are you playing next year" When NSA Nationals were in columbus a couple years ago I thought it was funny how many coaches were introducing themselves to my wife and daughter "reminding" them when tryouts were.

My daughters will be with the same team they have played with for the past 6 years. If it is not broke, don't fix it. We have been successful on and off the field. We have great parents, great kids, and a great time most of the time.
Unless they have a huge change of heart between now and then, we will still be Montgomery County Hammers next year.

Uber: That 35 years is years Ted and I have been married, not years coaching softball. :lmao: But we have been a part of the Ohio travel ball community for nearly 10 years now.

Re how long the 14U teams have been together: we started coaching Buckeye Heat '95 when JoeA got his college coaching job and couldn't coach these young ladies. (Summer of 2008) Seven of our present players were on the 2008 team.

The key to keeping a team together has been nailed by Triple. Tell them what level of competition you intend to play, what level of instruction you intend to give, and what your goals are for the players. Then tailor your team activities to what you advertised. Getting some money for college for our players is one of our announced goals. Everything else pretty much falls into place: coaches try to stay on top of the cutting edge of the sport (between Howard Carrier and the NFCA Coaches College, we are really blessed); lots of practice is devoted to tee work and other attention to throwing and hitting mechanics; players are expected to average 50 swings a day when not at tournaments, either on the tee or "dry" swings; tournament schedule is aimed at playing the best and, while it is a tall order, at qualifying for the ASA/USA Nationals.

IT IS WAY TO EARLY FOR THIS POST. This is usually an early to mid July post. We haven't even played yet.

Your 10U, 12U and even 14U teams that have a core group of players will start to see that group seperate in 14U. It happens because for several things:

1. Other things (boys, cars, academics, church, you name it) starts to take priority over softball.
2. Player/families look for other opportunities.
3. Family finances
4. You name it.

So, I have seen a big roster shuffle at 16U. Also, girls that were overlooked at younger age groups have finally bloomed and are now competing for roster spots.

At 16U you might be able to keep a core group for the 2 years but it will be tough.

She is the oldest on the team(I think) and will have to move to 18U next year I asked if they do well this year if they would all move up and the coach said it was a possibility. She would love that! We shall see but I am really impressed with the org so far so I would say yes
