Org's put in time, hard work and money to put on a try out. They have to market themselves to get prospects to show up. You don't just stick a banner in a field and wait. Mooching off their efforts is classless and what does that teach their kids? I'm sure they made their kids pass the fliers out. AND they are not only going after kids who didn't make the team. They are reaching kids who tried out and are waiting to see if they made the team. Trying to get them before they accept an offer. Lazy and classless.

First of all, a tryout costs no more than a practice. I have hosted several. You need the same fields and insurance which, if you are an established team, you already have. Also, you take a leap assuming that kids handed out the flyers. That is unsubstantiated.

Honestly, I have never resorted to handing out flyers at another team's tryouts...never needed to. It is lazy, especially when it is so easy to post tryouts online and in the newspaper. But it didn't hurt the other team. If the players were waiting to hear from other teams, then the flyers didn't change a thing. Maybe a kid found a team. There are a lot of girls still looking for teams. I just dislike the practice of whining and complaining on OFC without full knowledge of the facts. Again I say, relax.

It costs us to rent fields during tryouts... haven't been that lucky in every case with fields. Especially on fields that are not "home" fields which are chosen to get exposure or locations beneficial for the girls to come to us for. I'd probably have a thing or two to whine about if they did this at my tryouts.... "quit being so lazy and do it on your own" would be the message to the scavengers... my 2 cents and I know that doesn't get me too far. Is what it is!

And many times out of the coaches pockets. We don't have "org" money to cover this so that's when the "chapping" gets real bad. I added 2 more cents.

I always liked to have tryouts at our practice fields so parents could make an informed decision on travel distance. I would hate to mislead them just to get exposure. The bottom line is that there doesn't have to be additional cost to tryouts.

You ALWAYS have tryouts, member since July, 6 post sounds like chameleon to me! This assumption isn't any different than yours about what it cost an organization to do a tryout.

we NEVER mislead by going to other locations. If that's the case there are lots of misleading teams since many do multiple tryouts all over the place. We discuss all options at the beginning and never avoid the tough questions. Easy to understand your point but not here.

The parent organization of the flyer was contacted. They found it was done by an over zealous parent. They have since contacted the parent and explain what he/she did was wrong and that they do not condone such practices. It will not happen again and they offered an apology.

Case dismissed...

I had this happen with my older daughter at a basketball tryout about 8 years ago. It was great for us. We wouldn't have known about this other organization if it wasn't for the flyer. She didn't make the original team but did the other. Of course back then they didn't have a "OFC" for basketball full of information and tryouts.
It should be about the kids and making sure they find a team. Chances are if they make the team they receive the flyer at, they'll stay with that team anyway. Just my opinion, I can see it either way.

I just don't think the chances are so solid that if they make the team they receive the flyer at they will stay. Say you are at a try out and they tell you they will let you know by the following Friday. Common practice. You get the flyer on your why out, go talk to them and they talk you into signing on with them. Steal you away so to speak. Is that fair to the team that busted their butts to get people to their try out? Say the only thing the flyer people do is pass out flyers at other team's try outs. Target the ones you know are looking. If the flyer people are only interested in the players that don't make the team, why not ask them to pass on the information to those kids? I just think it lacks class. I say do your own promoting and don't mooch. Kids aren't going to be "homeless" if they don't make that original team, they will find a team, the right way. JMHO

Completely agree, well said.
We actually had a situation this year in one of our league games where one of the opposing coaches gave several of our players flyers regarding their tryouts after our game versus this team. This team is based in the same community as ours, and this coach is well known for his ummmm...lack of tact. This is funny because there will be half a dozen people on ofc that will know immedialtely of whom I am speeking. It is just a classless act, and the person(s) that use these type of tactics are scum. I hope the majority of athletes' parents recognize this type of activity and would steer thier dd's away from teams like this!

Wow!!! I would have called him out in front of them all. Season's over... then do it. Not during the season.

I'm guessing I'd catch grief seeing the lengths this thread took to avoid calling someone out. The team in question is not really a tournament team either, strictly a league team. I don't think I would be saving many OFC'ers the trouble of trying out for this organization by callling him to the mat.
