Multi-Sport Athletes

My dd is in the middle of all this. She played Euro ball, basketball and softball. Last summer she decided to become a pitcher played fall ball and played on a travel Euro ball team. Euro Ball lasted the fall, then went into basketball. All the while she was learning and practicing pitching. She gave up Euro ball in winter and spring to play softball (two teams). This August she decided she missed playing Euroball with her friends. So I really don't know how she plans on handling this, since she's got pitching lessons, a batting coach, plus basketball coming up for 7th grade and her softball team begins practice in January. My mind whirls.

It's tough for a multi-sport athlete these days. A select/travel sport combined with the same HS or MS sport is a year-round commitment. So we basically have 2, 3, 4, and even 5 sport athletes committed to some of these sports year-round. Add to that the committment of private lessons, education, and family and all of the sudden the calendar is so full it's spilling out all over the place. We need electronic devices like Blackberrys to store all of our calendar entries so we stay on track. Don't forget to sync up your device with Microsoft Outlook on a daily basis! Your family wants to go on vacation? Fat chance unless you piggyback it off an out of town tournament, providing you have the money to do so.

Last night both daughters were up after midnight finishing their homework. Today they both have volleyball games, the older dd plays at home and the younger one plays about an hour and a half away. We host the varsity dinner for the volleyball team tonight, and I have to check my Blackberry but I think I line judge. Tomorrow both kids have vb practice, and both vehicles need oil changes. My passenger side front window and my passenger side rear lock quit working and I need to find some time to get them fixed. My younger dd's softball org has a golf outing Saturday but I'm unable to attend because it's near quarter end and the auditors are asking for a ton of information so I must work that day to fill their requests. The water pump in my boys car went out and he's going to homecoming Saturday so he will need one of our cars. Sunday my younger dd has a one day fastpitch tourney at NKU and the dw wants to somehow fit in Kayaking afterwards that day in Wilmington. We had to cancel lessons because of the tourney. I'm sure I'm forgetting some things since this is coming off the top of my head and not from my Blackberry. Oh yeah, sometime this weekend my boy has a paintball tournament somewhere in Kentucky, I think on Saturday. They've reduced his hours at the theater so I'm sure he'll need around $100 bucks........

Sorry for the ramble but I'm sure many of you (if not all of you) can relate

Our kids school is so small they don?t have much of a choice, they are pressured into as many sports as they can handle, including band (I'll leave that one alone)! We're to small to have a football team, and this past season there wasn't enough kids interested to even field a HS baseball team! I think there is only around 25-35 kids per GRADE level. As for sports we have: softball:yahoo:, (did have) baseball, soccrrr, basketball, volleyball, golf, and cross country. I think that's all. Anyhow, if most kids don't participate in multiple sports they can't field a team. Then as I said, there is massive pressure for them to be in band as well;&.

DDs have learned if they have long bus rides or for that matter car rides too, they bring their school books with them and do their homework on the way to and from practices and so forth, they even had it with them for a weekend tourney. They adapt and so do we.

NO! That has become my favorite word lately. It was hard at first, but QUALITY of life and relationships have gone way up. Feel like I'm living life and not watching it go buy.

Highly suggest those running in the rat race to say, "NO"! a little more as it will do everyone some good. ^_^!

All I know, is that, once the youngest dd is out of the house, it's going to be very boring for the wife and I. Thank God she still has 6 more years.

I have about 6 years left also unless she is fortunate enough to be asked to play college ball. I figure after my kids are done I will either continue to coach or maybe even umpire to stay busy.

I think it comes down to committment. Girls that play every sport because they go to a small school may only be able to committ to school sports. I think everyone understands that. If travel ball was dedicated to the girls that only play "softball", it would definately reduce the number of teams out there.

To the girls that play all sports--don't commit if you can't attend practices, games, etc because of your school schedule. It only hurts the team.
