ASA Tournament Bat Wars

This was the most disorganized tourney. that I have ever attended in my three years in travel ball. We traveled 3 hours to get 1 - 1 hour game in. That game the umps didn't stop the game at an hour let us score the winning run ( Actual got 2 in) and then stopped it and said it was a tie. What a joke!

We showed up Friday to have our 2 games not happen. We showed up Saturday at 11am for a 12pm game ( never happened), 2 pm game (never happened) , they told us to come back at 9pm and 10:45 pm ( neither game took place). Ofcourse, Sunday they cancel. all games.

People had no idea what was going on in the TD tent. They just kept pushing games back and them cancel. them when the time can. The one game we did get in was on an unlined field, no batters box, no pitching circle, just a mess.

We had to stay two nights in hotels, pay for food, parking, and all the other little extras that came along. Its not bad enough the communication was poor, but there was no effort to even get the games played.

The City of Columbus should be really ashamed of itself.

As for all the people blasting 10u / 12u teams we never only played 1 -1 hour game and didn't make out any better then a lot of older teams. We didn't et the age brackets up so I think that all the negativity towards these age groups shouldn't be directed on here. This needs to be directed to the TD.

PS. Felt really bad for the Candian team that arrived in Columbus Thursday and never played a game. Sorry Girls!!

Shame on you Columbus!

When you e-mail the Mayor, let him know how much money your team or Organization spent in Columbus.

As an example our Organization spent:
tournament cost for us was $1700.00 entry fee,
Hotel stay we spent $6770.00,
gas bought in columbus was around $2500.00,
Eating out cost was around $7500.00
Merchandise bought at tournament was around $4000.00
Eating at the park was around $5000.00
And the parking fees were $600.00
total cost that the Parma Wildcats spent in Columbus was around $28,070.00
And we will not support Columbus again by coming to play at Berliner Park untill the City and Union figure out that May, June and July is the busy time for the Parks and Rec Dept and they need to have there workers on rolling days off to be able to support these tournaments with a cheaper and a better work force..

I mean How much work does the Parks and Rec union workers do in Dec, Jan and Feb
And how much work SHOULD the Parks and Rec union workers be doing in May, June and July

We had 4 teams at this tournament. If we can agree to the above figures, that means this tourney generated $982,450 with 140 teams participating. What? you want diamond dry? What? you want a full staff of city workers to line and drag the fields? What? you want the support of the city that is benefiting from all this revenue? You softball people sure expect a lot at such a discounted rate!

The "Big" Tournaments are not always better. If rain hits, it is Much easier to get 5 or 6 fields ready than 15 or 20.

College coaches are not going to wait around all weekend just to catch a short game in the mud.

Some High caliber schedules sound and look great but a good realistic outlook is just as good in my opinion.

The college showcase in the fall run by Shotwell was extremely well run, which was why I was excited to come back to Berliner. But this past weekend was a complete opposite of the way everything was handled at the fall showcase.

That's what I'm thinking Coach. Fields lined every game, etc....

Let me add another group that won"t be returning to this tournament.First games on Friday were started and most were either in 3rd or 4th inning when lightning halted play.Umpires were not paid anything for these games.Alot of umpires take vacation days from work to help girls be able to play on Fridays and then they sit around and receive nothing for games that are almost half over. Many umpires when they found this out left and thats why games were played with one or no umpires.I know of alot of umps that will never return to tourneys at Berliner under this leadership.

Wow and your scheduler is doing nothing about it?

Tealtown just was not prepared with additional employees for field work. Bottom line.

But, "union"/city fields can sometimes be a problem. When I was up North awhile back looking at diamonds... Barberton is a nice venue....but.... the wages a TD has to pay for employees was just awful. I talked to the city about maybe helping the costs by maybe giving a worker ( who wanted ) a day off during the week and then work the weekend... where that cost is not so much.

Sad, as it is a wonderful place to play and the diamonds are very nice and all has lights... but no TD will ever touch the place.

I have nothing against unions, etc.. afterall I grew up in a union stewerd's home... but the amount of dollars pouring into a community when a tournament is held is just unbelievable and if a TD can't get any cooperation from the city.. then the city does without.

I really liked those fields in Barberton and was hoping to secure it for the girls.

Dover has a nice park as well. Beautiful park seting... things for boys to do as well..lights, etc... Just not enough diamonds to play softball on.

BD, it just seems that city fields can be a TD's nightmare sometimes.

Did they do the drawing for the $5000.00 if they did who won or is that the money they will use to pay back the $175.00 to some teams. Just asking. As far as the 10 and 12u teams playing they paid there fee to get in the tournament just like every other team, the older girls should of got there games in first but that was the wonderful TD fault.

Subject: Capitol City Showdown

Dear Coach,

Wanted to touch base with you and thank you once again for coming to the Capitol City Showdown. Because of the weather, it certainly wasn?t a very enjoyable tournament for anyone. But I guess we all know that fastpitch softball is an outdoor sport and everyone is subject to the whims of Mother Nature. Every time we tried to make adjustments on the fly for what we thought would be the best for the majority of the teams, something new came up. We now realize there are some issues with the Berliner Park department that we need to address, and we will certainly do so for future tournaments.

Because of this we are going to issue refunds to the teams that did not get in their games. We have a list of which teams played how many games and the refunds will vary accordingly. But in order to do this, we need all the teams to send us where the check should be sent and to whom it should be made out --- the coach or the organization. We realize this is just a fraction of the money the team spent to come to the tournament, but unfortunately it is the only money we have any control over.

So again, we thank you for coming to the Capitol City Showdown and we want to let you know that every change we made with the changing circumstances was truly done in an attempt to make the event better for everyone involved in the tournament ? not a particular team, organization or age group. Some of the decisions worked but unfortunately some of them did not.

Thanks again,
Bill B.

PS ? We are happy to announce that the winner of the $5000 prize for the fundraising tickets was Kevin Hoy of Olmstead Township, Ohio. Congratulations Kevin! We would like to thank everyone that participated in the fundraiser. We are happy we could help participating teams raise over $6000 for their organization this year. Because not enough tickets were sold to cover the grand prize, unfortunately there were no secondary winners.

I talked to an umpire who was there this weekend and if its any consolation it sounds like they got even less commnuication then the teams recieved. My bet is that he will not be returning either. Only so many times this can happen before there are no teams or umpires who will attend.

Black Easton coaches bucket left behind over the weekend. Please pm me if you have seen it.

PS: The avatar is a pic I found that looks like a pitching machine I would dabble with. I made a few back in the day (much smaller).
I know, piching machines are bad.....
