Uber - I got the following from http://www.fastpitching.com/index.html

I think these average speeds are pretty accurate for the midwest, but I would put heavy emphasis on the extremely rare top speed numbers. For example, a 13u consistently throwing 61 will be known by every D-I college coach east of the Miss. Extremely rare.

I'm assuming you want to work on timing for hitting. Using these average speeds, just fire up an Excel spreadsheet and do a time-speed-distance calc. and you'll be on your way. For a change up, I always used a speed that is roughly 78% - 80% the speed of the fastball. That's typically what you'll see from a good back-hand change with lots of back-spin.

10U - Avg. Speed 38-42 - Top Speed 48-53 Low to mid 50's is very rare.
12U - Avg. Speed 44-50 - Top Speed 53-59 Upper 50's is extremely rare but we have seen as high as 61 mph from a 13 year who was still eligible to play 12U
14U - Avg. Speed 49-54 Top Speed 56-61
16U - Avg. Speed 53-57 Top Speed 60-68 Again high 60's is very rare but there are a few capable
18U - See 16U

W - Yep, I agree that those "top" speeds are high, and very rare. Most "good" pitchers in Ohio hover around the upper end of the average speed brackets, with the "garden variety" being close to the lower end. IMO, I would even toss out those "top speeds", because it's a rare occasion to be up against a pitcher of that caliber - fun to watch, but rare.

I would have to agree with most of the posts here. We have a 10U travel team with 4 pitchers. Our number 1 when all of her stars are lined up can hit 48 but throws 43-45 for the most part. Our number 2 can get to 42 but throws 39-40 most of the time. Our 3 & 4 who will be able to stay down in 10U again next year both are 35-38.

I love the pitching parents. This past winter my assistant and I started holding pitching practices once a week. The first week we had the parents sitting around telling all of their dd's how to pitch. Not that Im knocking the bucket dads for some of them are very sharp but we had someone there to work with the girls. My assistant and I tossed several ideas around on how to get the parents to just watch. My assistant wanted to close the practice but the young lady who was helping us had a better idea. The next practice when all of the parents started on their dd's we stopped the practice. Had all of the girls go sit in their parents spotand brought all of the parents to the mound. The looks on their faces when we handed them a ball and said now show them what you want........was priceless. When they started throwing balls everywhere our girls lost it and had a great time telling mom and dad how to pitch.

We have 3... one avg is 41-43, the other is 44-46, and the other is 46-48 and has hit 50 in game play several times. All taken recently. And none of these are my DD!

Les,

Aubrey threw great this weekend in Florida. From my prespective, she was definitely in the high 40's. Given her size (height), long arms, & dedication, she has the chance to be a future star w/out question. I am excited to watch her progress!!!

wg--ur crying or ur dd's crying? haha!
do 10s HAVE pitching speed? and is it assessed when it hits the backstop for a wild pitch or the actual mitt (hey, when my little monster becomes old enough to pitch, i will turn from mocking to appreciating her 55mph riseball)

yeah, she could be a phenom... she tried out in late August at 31-33 mph and people laughed at me on OFC when she came back 2 weeks later throwing 8-10 mph more and I posted it on here.. I swallowed my competitive tongue and watched that great lil girl do her thing... Truly hard worker and hard to find of this caliber in every way. Have another just like her... God Bless her "bucket mom"!!!

Just think next month your about to see pitchers throw 65mph with 4 pitches at 10u a fastball, a change up, a drop ball, and a rise. I saw it last year as a 14u coach and what I saw was fastballs at about 40 to 48, change ups between 40 to 48, drop balls that rose, and rise balls that dropped. We're about to be entertained and discouraged by the end of August, but just maybe we may have a couple of quality pitchers jump out ahead of the rest whether it is with blazing speed or just her ability to hit the spot 99% of the time.

Does anyone know of a pitching coach in Southeast OH? Live in Athens County and don't want to travel far through out the winter.

NSA "A" Nationals in Chattanooga had a skills competition earlier this week, 2 girls in the 10U hit 52 while another 3 were 47-49 and the others were 44-45....each pitch had to be close to a strike to count (while I realize this is not game scenario, it's rare to see a radar gun at a 10U game)

after facing the Diamond Kats last year I agree they had decent pitching, not dominating, but boy they could play every aspect of the game really well. They hit the ball really well, fielded well, and ran the bases to death. Also saw the Laser's pitcher during an indoor scrimmage last year. She was tough as they speeds above mention. For fun, wonder how that Diamond Kats team of last year would do against the Lasers and Nitro teams this year? Virtual I know, but fun to debate (hi-jack).

At the all sanctioned world series skills comp. there was a 10u girl who threw 53,53,54mph three others at 48-51.

At 10U, the girls can throw 70mph if they want, they still have to be able to find the plate. Walks and hit batters can kill a team really quick at that age. Last year my dd was hitting 51-52 consistantly at 10U. Hitting the strikezone consistantly is another story. She did very well, but could get wild at times. She is at the same speed now in 12U (bigger ball, 40 feet, hormones, etc) and she has improved her movement and control. Thanks Marie Shaver!

I have to reply to this. First of all Marie is awesome! Second are you kidding me 10u pitchers that are throwing screwballs and rise balls? Or do you mean inside fastballs and High fastballs. You have to throw it the HIGH 50's to get these pitches to work. Believe me I have a 13 yr old dd who throws pretty hard (no I wont brag about her speed) and she is just learning to control these pitches. There is no way a 10 yr old or 11 yr old could have the physical strength and control to throw these pitches. Get serious people in 10u you just want strikes and if your dd has movement with speed than she is blessed.
