10U Preseason poll

Right now good ball players are signing up for their local rec teams for whatever reason, finances, inability to commit to a full summer schedule, a lack of travel ball or tourney knowledge, or simply a girls desire to play with her friends and classmates. This is 10u. I stand by my statement that there are teams at 10u rec that would beat teams in your top 10. Not all 10u rec teams are coached the same. Remember we all started somewhere. Im sure most of us and our daughters have been involved with rec teams, or maybe you and your daughters started playing travel at 5yo and won the t-ball world series. Not saying the best rec team could win a weekend tourney, just saying they could compete and win in single games.

How long has it been since you watched elite 10u teams play? I have been around 10u now for the past four years and in that time I have seen plenty of All-Star Rec teams (not true rec teams but All Stars) try to compete in travel tournaments. I have seen an All Star rec team give an elite team a tight game but they didn't win and that elite team was down a couple of it's best players that day. That is the closest I have ever seen your scenario come true and again, it wasn't a straight-up rec team. Usually those All Star rec teams get clobbered and finish at or near the bottom. I'm not speculating but stating observed fact.

I just don't see a rec team that plays a couple of days a week facing 30-35 mph pitching often with adjusted rules like no drop 3rd stepping into a tourney like Stingray's and competing. There are good players playing rec ball no doubt about that but they'd all have to be on the same AND be used to playing at that level for them to compete. That's a lot of "ifs". But on any given day.

I almost commented last night when I saw that but decided to let it go (guess that was a momentarly lapse LOL).

Bottom line the top teams in the state also have stud pitchers, catchers, infielder, outfielders, hitters and baserunners. Even if a rec pitcher can shut them down they will score runs on dropped third strikes, walks, bunts, errors, and passed balls.

My 10u rec team was pretty good last year. Three of the girls from my team are now playing tb (2 pitchers). That being said my rec team would have been overwelmed by the talent of the travel teams I saw this fall. I gaurantee a third of my pitchers k's were dropped by our catchers. We were used to 4 outfielders no dropped 3rd strike and no stealing of home. Plus the agressiveness of travel teams would kill girls not used to it.

I think this is a crazy statement!! Anyone that has seen some of the top 2-3 10U teams in the state the past 3 years would know that these teams would put balls in play, get on base and score a few runs against a REC Ball Defense with a Stud Pitcher.

NO DOUBT!! All the top teams will put the ball in play this summer.. No matter the pitcher!! Our girls have been seeing 50+ mph all winter.. And 3 different pitches.. There gonna hit the ball, you better be ready to play D!! Defense wins championships.. I think mad hornets 10u Stingrays only stuck out a total of 3 times in 2 championship games this fall but lost both very close games.. That means the defense had to make the other 39 outs in both championship games to win them.. Stud pitchers help, this is a team sport!!

The amount of arrogance at 10u is what amuses me. And the season hasnt even started. Its funny to see all of the assumptions that a rec catcher will drop third strikes on a regular basis, or that a rec middle infield cant make regular routine plays, or that rec coaches dont teach defense. I have seen pitchers in 10u rec that have as much or more speed with control as the best travel pitchers. It just is not that rare in 10u for players to stay in rec although they could take a spot from your daughter. Again i am not saying they could win the weekend, but would win games.

Always do what I did when our community had a hot to trot 10u team in league ball, take them to a travel tournament and throw them against the best. Did that back in 2007 with oldest daughters team and two of the games it was.....HELLO.......
Even though it was the start of my daughters 2nd year at 10u travel ball the rest of the parents whom thought their kids were the toast of the area this was their first look into this world.
I found the old score book we lost 21-4 to Valley Extreme, 6-1 to Ohio Ice-Cole, 8-2 to Poland Pride and 15-0 to Ohio Ice-Cole.
The parents were blown away that girls at this age could play so well and how advanced they were. Put their egos in check!

I say put them in a tournament or two and let them have at it. By the way this team went unbeaten in their first year of 10u league ball in the North Coast League and put the hammer to most teams in 2006. Summer of `07 we lost 2 games in league action, one due a horrible call by an ump at home plate.

I coached a rec team this fall while my dd also played travel. We faced one of her travel teammates in the fall rec league. I watched her travel teammate pitch well against one of the top travel teams in Oh while having a travel team behind her. Then the next weekend give up more runs to my rec team because of the lack of defense in the field behind her. Its very hard to compete against a COMPLETE travel team compared to a good rec team who can have 4-5 good players.

I was wondering; How do we define a 10u stud pitcher? Im sure we have many opinions out there! Would it be a pitcher in rec ball that blows it by all the batters she faces in the rec league? Is it her changing of speeds, or both? or is it a TB pitcher in 10u doing the same thing to TB teams? Now that would be a stud pitcher! I believe there are very good players out there playing rec , Ive seen them too , but in a rec setting . Rec is where the girls come from 90% of the time unless they are following sister or have connection in travel. My DD came from rec at 9 and was many times the best player on the field in her rec league. When she went to travel we were humbled by the talent level of girls with the same story we had. If that true stud is out there people would know, especially people on this site! The top teams have the experienced coaches and instructors in place that the great rec teams just cant stack up to . As a matter of fact those top TB poll teams have stud pitchers, the only problem is that they face very disciplined hitters... some are stud hitters. Going undefeated in 10u rec league play behind a stud pitcher is not uncommon that same team beating a top level TB team, I cant see it!

Arrogance or experience?

At 10u the number of quality players in rec is greater than the number of quality players in travel. They are just spread out over more teams. Its just shear numbers. There are probably 8-10 times the number or rec teams compared to travel at 10u. There are plenty of organizations that dont even field 10u or have difficulty doing so. These same orgs may have 2 to 4 12u teams. So either there is a greater amount of talent in 10u rec, the 10u rec players through divine intervention suddenly became able to hang with those already in travel, or hundreds or quality 12u players decided to move to Ohio.

I get what your trying to say Flygirlsdad and yes some of those girls probably would make some travel teams. Im sure there is many talented girls in numbers as you say but playing against what they are would make them look that good. Much easier to stand out in rec ball than in travel ball.
Up in high school now with our oldest girl you can tell when you play teams whom has played travel ball from the ones whom havent. Girls from our area that are the studs of rec ball league take that back seat at high school ball cause they can not match up with the players with the travelball expierence

Again you are right there is alot of girls out there at that age that are solid talents and would do fine in travelball but again look at the talent they are going against. Also some might not get the chance do to money situation and/or parents do not know anything about summer tournament action. We started a year late due that ourselves with our oldest.

Not bashing your thinking, agreeing somewhat with some of it, but it is two different worlds. See my post above about putting our then hotshot 10u team in a tournament.

I can't wait to see all these 50+ pitchers especially with 3 different pitches. Looks like it's gonna be a long summer for us. And a defence that had to make 39 outs in the field with that kind of pitching??? Holy Cow! Were going back to rec.

um..............not comparing, I said you can tell whom has been playing travelball from 10u and whom hasnt when they reach high school age. You do a few exceptions to the rule though!

I dont know dude, been at 10u for a number of years a few different times. I coach both rec and travel. Last year I put my good 10u team into a travel tournament. We had 4 travel kids on the team, 2 catchers, a pitcher who was throwing high 40's and a 2nd base/leadoff type player. We beat the local travel teams who dont leave the area to play, They had problems putting the ball into play off my pitcher but we got steam rolled by Team Michigan 2 times in the tournament. Team Michigan is good they would probably be a top 10 in Ohio but we werent in their class. Off that rec team 2 more kids went on to play travel this year. If we played Team Michigan 10 times we would lose to them 8,9 or 10 times.

So I would agree with a rec team could beat a travel team, but not your thoery a Rec team with a stud pitcher beating the best on the list. I mean come on lol, the best teams all have stud pitchers themselves and stud hitters use to hitting off of stud pitchers, use to playing other teams that put balls in play off their stud pitchers.

You know this is an interesting topic, I dont know if you would hear these scenarios and hypetheticals at other age groups, because it would be too late in most cases to catch up to the experience that TB players would have against Rec players ....so that would also say something about the TB program VS the REC program. At 10u rec its not too late to catch up with a (10u/2nd year TB player)! At 12u its starting to slip away, at 14u, its nearly impossible to compete at the level of TB compared to REC (with exception to the the gifted DD or Dedidated DD & father putting in the many hours scenario). My opinion is that competition makes you a better player, every day at practice you are competing and being pushed by your teammates and coaches, and your success will be based on the personel around you!Thats the difference; Bottom line!
