The Galligher family as well as my own, want to "THANK" all of the players, coaches, friends and families, who took part in our 12U tournament. ?There was some outstanding ball played this weekend, by some truly up and coming fastpitch stars.

Congratulations to the Miami County Blaze for winning our 12U tournament, and to the Ohio Dragons for being our runner-up. ?

does anyone know if the emeralds were a 10u team because size wise they looked like they were. I seen them play the classics and they had a pitcher that looked like she was 9 but threw decent for her size.

Does anybody know the ruling for an outfielder covering a base. Is it considered a dead ball at this point and all the runners return to their bases? Or does the result of any play that occurs after this play stand? Or is up to the umpires discretion?

If your talking outside, outfielders are allowed to cover bases, make put outs, or anything else an infielder would do. There are no specific rules written anywhere covering indoor softball.
Inside at GFOD, we do not let outfielders cover bags, because they play so close to the other fielders, it would be nearly impossible to hit a ground ball and not be put out. With the older age groups, we only let them use a centerfielder, but with the younger girls, we want to get as many girls into the games, therefore we play all nine. Not many outfielders are going to be able to pick up a ball hit to them in the outfield, and run over and touch the bag for an out. So that is why we don't let it happen inside at GFOD.
First, I didn't make the rules for this indoor tournament, and the play you are talking about is one of those freak plays that really isn't covered by any rules, so its more of a judgement call. With that being said. I saw the play at GFOD, that I believe you are referring to. Had I been umpiring, I would have looked at the outfielder covering first, as a delayed dead ball situation, and let the play continue. After the play was dead, I would have awarded the batter/runner 1st, but the runner coming home would have still been out. Once again, this would be my "judgement" call.

georges,...If it is considered a dead ball ,.... all runners return to there bases . I know the play your talking about . Soon as the right fielder made the illegal play,..its dead ball at that point ,..anything that happens after the infraction does not stand .

Lady Knights ,..how can you let play continue after a dead ball infraction ? Explain

The BIG gray area on that call is the word COVER the bag she was playing in right field and fielded the ball came up touched the bag so was she COVERING the bag or did she just make the force out????? ita all gray!!

After taking a little more time to think about this situation, I now believe the umpires got the call right.
It stated in the rules that no outfielder would be allowed to cover a base, by the RF picking up the ball and covering 1st for the force out, this is an infraction, resulting in a dead ball. Batter/runner gets first, runner at third, goes back to third.

Shayne, I was told during the day that if the RF tagged the runner and did not step on the base that it would have been a good out. Is that true? I am trying to clarify the rules for the 10U team and that particular situation was a tough one. If the outfielder would have let the runner at 1st go and threw home, and was in the baseline between 1st and 2nd, and got the out at home, would that have been an out?

This was a good evenly matched tournament . Alot of close games . Solid play and good coaching. Even the younger teams were scrapy. I don't think there were too many games you could go into ,..thinking you had an easy one. Great job by all the girls .

Rico the pitcher you are talking about is 11. and yes the emeralds are small in size but big in heart. All the girls on this team are 11 with 1 being 10. We were in every game we played in only losing by 1 run when we did lose.

The 12U Tournament was FANTASTIC! ?Great way to get the traveling season started. ?We played some seriously competitive teams and are geared up for the next G.F.O.D Tournament in May (in Bellville, Ohio). ?Congratulations to The Miami Blaze and I'd like to personally thank the Fighting Irish for a fantastic and all out "ball game" with my girls, the G.F.O.D Thunder 12U Team! Thanks to all the teams for participating and see you in May!

Shayne, thanks for clarifying this situation. I was wondering if it was considered a dead ball, because if the runner had been safe, I don't believe that the umpire would have made that runner go back to third. The ruling would have allowed the runner at 1st to be safe (which I agree with), but the run would have scored (which I wouldn't agree with) if it was considered a dead ball. The rules only stated that if this infraction occurred it would be to the offensive's advantage, but doesn't mentioned that it would be a dead ball. If it was a dead ball, the umpire should have called this and stopped the play. As the situation turned out, the fans were screaming at the umpire (and at the opposing team's fans) that the oufielder touched 1st base. The umpire then made his decision after all play had stopped.
