Dave:

It meant that we couldn't go to Orrville or Picktown, but it was worth it. We traveled a lot in quest for the berth, but now we get to enjoy Stingrays (Picktown the first two days), Marysville, and GAPSS before heading out to Illinois.

CONGRATULATIONS! We've been cheering for you all the entire way. Glad to see last weekend paid off. Like to think that the previous week got you over the top. ^_^!

You said it perfect. Playing the Intensity 3-0 and So. Cal 3-2 ITB really opened alot of these girls mind that they are top players and can play with anyone. We are very excited to go to Moline and represent Ohio.

....the Maddogs just entered every qualifying tournament they could in an effort to win a bid. the only way to qualify is to enter. .... what about the Doom 95? they actually didn't place. they were passed a bid. is that any different?

just some thoughts to ponder.

I'm not a softball guru by any means but..... I always thought of ASA/USA Nationals as the big time. A place where the Slammers/Intensity go to compete against the best of the best. The teams from Arizona, California, Texas.... But now I find out not only do you not need to win a tournament to qualify, you can win a coin toss or not even play at all. With that criteria a team in the Maddogs situation could qualify without ever winning a game all season. (Nothing against the MD's just an example...Love the Dogs) It certainly takes away from the prestige of the tournament.

It sure brings to light what the tournament really is. Obviously a place for the best teams to play but a money grinder at heart. I'm guessing that with double elimination NO ONE will be able to leave Moline before Thursday.

I wish I was more excited but then again it's not about me and I'm sure DD will have a great time.

Not sure why, but I feel i have to defend the comment about the region 9 tourney that never took place.

Every team in Ohio had the opportunity to enter the tournament. the other teams must have felt it was too important to enter other tournaments. It sounds as though the Cincy Metro has the same situation. If the Doom 96 had previously earned a bid elsewhere and chose to drop out, that would mean the Riptides would be awarded the bid automatically.

the Maddogs just entered every qualifying tournament they could in an effort to win a bid. the only way to qualify is to enter. the tournament director took our money in good faith. all the rules were followed to the letter. not sure what was done wrong by the team.

so if by chance we chose not to go, and the bid is passed on, will that team get comments for getting a bid for a tournament they didn't enter? what about the Doom 95? they actually didn't place. they were passed a bid. is that any different?

just some thoughts to ponder.

Woolfman:

I agree, if we hadn't qualified at States we would have been in the best of three situation with you. We too made the decision to sign up for virtually every National qualifying opportunity. We'll be rooting you on in Moline.

ASA makes a real effort to make this a true National tournament. That means guaranteeing bids to each region and state knowing that in some of those there may be more berths than quality teams (or teams at all) that show up. Without making this effort, ASA would be reduced to a Texas/CA regional showdown or more likely a CA state tournament. Yes that means some teams get in without going through the gauntlet that others have to go through but that doesn't lessen the tournament in general. In your scenario 1 team may have gotten a berth by virtue of being in the right place at the right time, but that doesn't mean that the other berths weren't hard earned or that every team that wants a free pass can get one.

MN only used 1 of their 3 berths to 14UA last year and none the year before and only 2 of 3 the year before that. But this year 12 of the best teams are battling it out for the 3 spots to Moline this weekend at ASA State and I would guess all berths will be used and reasonably earned.

I think the system could be better, to crown a true National champ it should be IMO finish high at State to qualify for regionals, finish high at regionals to qualify for Nationals. Take teams from each regional in proportion with participation and play a National tournament. That way if you have states with minimal participation and weak best teams they would get weeded out at regionals and you could have a reasonable number of teams at Nationals (220+ is a little ridiculous).

I wasn't criticizing you. I was simply identifying how each team got its berth. If it came across as cranky, I really didn't mean it that way. Heck, the tournament where we qualified only had something like 8 teams, with varied levels of skill.

I AM hoping, however, that in future years the Region 9 tournament will be scheduled at a time that doesn't conflict with Laser Nation and Compuware. It was a hard choice for us to skip the Region 9 tournament but we really benefited from playing in the Laser Nation tournament that weekend. Seems a shame that teams have to pass up one or the other.

Anyway, hopefully we will cross paths in Moline. Best of luck to you and the Maddogs.

Anybody know whether Ohio Classics 13U are going to Moline with their automatic berth from winning 2009 Eastern Nats?

Snocatz,
Great idea. I think that would be a MUCH better process.

I've never understood whether you get an automatic bid to the age group that you will be playing the next year rather than a bid in the age group that you won. Do you know the answer off the top of your head? Thanks.

No thanks, the current system works better than what you propose.

When was there ever 220+ teams? The largest field I'm aware of was 164 last year for 16U. 164 teams seems excessive, but the right number will still be quite large in order to have a good national representation and include all the top teams. I don't think it is worth imposing an additional cost on all the teams of regional playoffs to pare it down some.

Let's look at our regions.

Northern Region: Minnesota gets 3 berths (but oftentimes doesn't use all of them) and South Dakota gets 1. It doesn't make sense to have a regional playoff between 2-4 teams from 2 associations.

Pacific Coast Region - SoCal (13), NorCal (4 state + 3 metros), Central Cal (4), Hawaii (1) and Nevada (1):
- Hawaii shouldn't have to make an extra trip to the mainland to keep their berth.
- We need our Regional to continue being a second chance for strong teams that didn't get a berth at their association championship. 21 good teams will be battling it out this weekend for 2 berths. Some of the teams are strong enough to finish top 20 at Nats and not all of them will get a berth.

The easier and better fix is to establish the number of berths for association and regional championships based on the number of teams competing. If they can't get the minimum number of teams for a berth at least 30 days in advance, they can open it up to outside teams to get the minimum.

We went at Laser Silver as 12u. There were many good teams but also some teams that were very beatable. I personally am very glad to see all the bids - the more ohio the better.

Coach Murph

ps - Easterns will be fun - good teams from Ohio going.

Vipers
Championship
OFC Heat
a few others I am not thinking of.

Automatic berths can be used for whatever age group you will be playing next year. The top 2 teams from 12U last year got automatic berths to 14U this year.

I spotted the Ohio Classics on the ASA JO Berth Report for 14U http://downloads.asasoftball.com/tournaments/pdf/2010JOBerthReport.pdf.

The team has to have at least 5 returning players to maintain the berth. See ASA Code, Article 106 definition of Defending Champion for more details.
