Hi. I coach the Bustos Hurricanes. Things went well this weekend. The only thing I was bummed to see were teams delaying the game to get a win, intentionally walking girls to avoid a big hit from a girl, or arguing calls. It's a showcase. Putting kids in high pressure situations allows the coaches to see how they respond. No college coach cares if a pitcher can walk someone on command. Trust me. I coached in college. They want to see a pitcher and a great hitter bare down and fight, as well as the defense keep it on the infield and throw the girl out. Too many freshman in college crumble under the pressure and teams lose in the last innings because the time never ran out to save their butts. Personally, I would have loved to start some innings with a runner on third base to see if the pitcher and defense could stop a run. Not one coach that I talked to even knew the score. Who cares...

Well stated Liz,
Jamie and his group did an exceptional job and most teams were using P/T players as stated above. People need to remember deep in your minds, it's a Showcase, nothing more. Get the girls seen, don't argue calls, sit back and enjoy the magic.... Was only there Sunday, but a great day of ball played.

Now about that cold weather, can you guys do something about that?? :)

I hope they made some good money for the fundraising for Ellen.... That's more important than any wins/ losses

We would like to get some feed back.....GOOD and even BAD from the coaches, players, parents and fans!

1. What can we do to make the "SHOWCASE" even better?

2. What would you like us to add or maybe drop from the "SHOWCASE"

3. I'm asking about the playing part of the tournament itself?

4. Take less teams and play more games?

5. Add situations per inning? eg. add baserunners to 1st, 2nd, 3rd so you can work on things?

6. What I'm NOT looking for but may still be discussed is things like "we need more bathrooms for the women" (We do know that) or We need netting over the spectator seating area (We know that too) But if you can think of ANY ideas that we can change please post on here or send me an email if you want.

7. We really want the 2 Best of the Best Showcases to be Top Showcases and draw the talent and the college coaches each year!

THANKS for ANY input, GOOD or BAD!!! We will try our best to improve and make this event even better for the players!!! Because that is really what this Showcase is all about!!!

Jamie,

A little off topic, but is the summer BOB going to be the July 4th weekend in 2010? Have you scheduled that yet?

Thanks in advance,
Marie

Yes the Best of the Best will be on the 4th of July weekend again in 2010. I hope to have the entry forms out on our website by the end of October if not sooner!

The Wolfpack also plans to host a tournament for the 18U, 16U, 14U and 12U age groups the first weekend in June!

We also plan to host a Best of the Best at the 14U and 12U age groups on the fourth of July weekend as well in Massillon at a complex about 3-4 miles from Genshaft Park.

I think the format is fine, but I really truly believe not having fences up changed the dynamics of the game, especially in a showcase tourney. I love to see the long ball and so do the college coaches. OF were hesitant to really go after balls for fear of getting by and turning a double into a HR. Not to mention that it took away warmup space.

Liked the 1 1/2 time limits on Sunday, please don't change. Number of teams was OK but would like to have had six games total, three games on Saturday and three on Sunday. Especially for the teams who had players missing on Saturday it would make it worth while for them to show up on Sunday if they had three games. We played at 9:40 and 6:00 which was a real killer.

I think each field should have certain areas cordoned off (possibly behind home plate) that are only accessible by the college coaches. Usually somebodys grandma and grandpa has gotten there early and are sitting in the college coaches best vantage point.

Great tourney glad we got to participate.

Ideally I would like to see no time limit. Take the game back to what it was like before we tried to jam 7 innings into 32 mins. ;)

However, 1.5 hours was better than most.

I would also like to see situations brought into the tournament. Play once through the lineup normal and then add baserunners into the mix. I know they would help prepare our girls for when that actually happens and it counts. First and third situations are great for a catcher to show off her arm. Bases loaded is great for a pitcher to need to bear down, and so forth...

I agree fences would be nice. Maybe at least on 2 fields and the other fields can play with no fence.

No official scores up would help eliminate a need to win... hopefully. And maybe a time limit between each inning like 30 seconds to be on the field and first batter up. All just suggestions. Then maybe we would could finish the game.

All and all it seemed like teams were well matched and didn't seem to have too many blowouts if any.

Why not do it like @ Rising Stars in Florida, the kids of course are responsible to invite the college coaches they want to see them then the coaches have the right to stop games ( not in the middle ,but before the game ) and talk with the team coaches to play Susy @ short or I would like her to pitch to this or that batter....my DD went twice and actually it was fun for the girls that had done their homework and were serious about being recruited and this way the college coach could better evaluate the players they were interested in....@ 15 my DD pitched a whole game against a Junior College and won in front of her future college coach....

Good comments and good ideas...... Please keep them coming and I can take it.... Any bad ones too! To improve you must be able to change!!! Any players out there with ideas of what you would like out of this tournament?

Jamie, DD mentioned it would be neat to see an All-Star game at the end, made up of players voted in by opposing coaches or even requested by the college coaches. At least 2 or maybe 4 teams with each team present having to be represented. Maybe having a college coach "guest coach" a team.

Congrats on getting the event in---it is getting very tough to get fields ready now that the sun isn't very powerful and the ground is very cold.

I am not an expert on Showcases by any means, but I think the idea of situations would be very good and emphasizing that the pitchers try to strike out the batters rather than walking them in a clutch situation---as Bustos said, you are showcasing individuals not teams. I wanted to try something like this in the Fall Ball leagues here in Beavercreek but for a variety of reasons, I did not follow through.

Queen of Diamonds starts with 1 strike and 1 ball on the batter. Helps to show the aggressiveness and consistency of the pitcher and of course the hitter has to be more aggressive with that strike already applied. Would also help shorten the showcase times without completely sacrificing at bats. We actually now tell our hitters who need to become more aggressive that they are to assume they already have one strike on them when they get to the plate.

CGS-- I wonder how starting with a 1-1 count would go over in a summer tournament-- I know it's non-traditional but I think it would make the game more lively, especially with the mound at 43 feet. And, it should reduce the number of pitches.

But back to the question of a showcase, I think it would be another situation you added in. I know after 30 years in the Air Force and countless exercises, we always tried hard to simulate crises because that's when you got see how folks react under stress. Bases loaded and a 1-1 count on batter and no outs is real stressful!

a comment on starting with a 1-1 count. It's going to be obvious my kid is not a pitcher . I don't like the 1-1 starting position. Against upper level pitching it makes scoring runs too difficult. As much as I hate to admit it fastpitch is still dominated by the girl in the circle. I want the O to catch up with that type pitching but as long as (the best) pitchers practice 12 months a year and the best hitters practice 6-8 months a year pitching is still going to dominate. Soooo , there were a bunch of low scoring games down in SC . Several 1-0's , lots of 2-1. Giving an ace pitcher that 1st strike is downright cruel to hitters. So as a hitters dad I say "No Thanks" .
