ok. my only comment. Hoover, DI champion had one player? no one on 1st or 2nd team? c'mon man. Ericka Warren is one of best catcher's in the state.

Excellent point with Warren.

With no specific selection in mind, every year I scratch my head when I see some of the selections.

It is a crime that some very deserving kids are not recognized. It cheapens the award when someone of lessor talent is given the award over someone more deserving.

Some kids get the award based on their abilities and the year they have had, as it should be. On the other hand, some get it based on something else, such as self-promotion, who they know and, dare I say, what deals are made on their behalf.

I believe the selections were made at the end of the regular season, but not announced until State tournaments were over. Ask your coach why a player or two on your favorite team wasn't selected.

I find it interesting that in all the divisions, at least 50% are pitchers. And all the 2nd teams are mostly position players.

I find the newspapers selections whether it be Cleveland, Columbus, Cincy, Dayton, or Toledo, have more non-biased all metro voting system in place.

It's a very political process from what I understand. I dont mean to take anything away from the girls in any way, but it does make you say hmmmm.

I know for our region the voting took place on May 8th.. Whoever won state has nothing to do with it. And this is softball, not Ohio State Football. Never heard of a deal being made so a girl makes all-state. Even so, coaches cannot vote for their own players anyway they can only nominate and then the rest of the coaches vote. But first that means the coach has to have nominated the player first. Also, important to remember - if the high school coach is not a member of the OHSFSCA (coaches association) then none of their players will even be nominated for the chance because they would not be at the meeting if they weren't a member!

I don't like the blind criticism of the selections either. I did not see any other catchers, or other position players, other than the teams that my daughters HS team played. How good of a season could I say someone else had when I had never seen them play? Coaches in each district nominate and vote on the players in each district. If you don't make a certain district then your chances are obviously not too good you're going to get anything at the state level.
I know I'd trade a state title over an all state selection any day.

selections caused some head scratching for me. In our district we had a team that was sub 500 on the year , finished bottom 1/2 of a weak conference, was run ruled at least 6 times (including a game where they were outscored 32-1) and had 4 girls all district. ?? kinda crazy. MD

Is their coach a member of the OHSFSCA?

Also, not necessarily politics because in any sport it is done the same but hard for any freshman to make it..

Alot of politics involved as usual!!If you don't belong to a conference you get snubbed!Caitlin Gambone of Canton Central Catholic was 51 for 99, with over 30 rbi's and 2 homeruns.Probably the best 2nd baseman in the state
as a freshman, and she didnt even get mentioned......plus, I'm not even mentioning her sister Lauren,(.418) who also had over 30 rbi along with Lizzi Weber 41-87(.471)...Probably the best top three hitters in any line up in the state of Ohio!!!Well done Ladies!!!!By the way the team was 21-4 and had an outstandind record vs DI and DII opponents.

Not to take away from your point about being snubbed and politics, but as to your claim of top 3 hitters in any lineup, the last stats I saw for Div. 1 Louisville had Desi Givens batting close to .600 with 10 hrs, Chandler Rice hitting about .475 with 7 homeruns and Emily Isla batting about .470. Both Givens and Rice had over 30 rbis also.

I know we are beating this to death, but you have to remember, it is high school (political) softball. The coaches have there networks and work them. Do I feel that the girls that got the nod are deserving, yes. But a lot of the girls that did not get the vote are deserving also.

Why should it be up to coaches of the OHSFSCA to make the decisons. Thats why I put more validity in the newspapers selections. All the coaches are contacted, they fill out the forms with averages hitting and fielding stats, whether they are a member of the OHSFSCA or not. Then the staff selects the teams based on there knowledge of the girls play and the submitted selection criteria.

I believe the best part of the media selection program, is that they select girls based on defensive postions. One, maybe 2 selections per fielding postion plus a DP. That would be a true allstate team. Not pitchers get 55%+ of the spots available on first teams for all divisions.

Wow, I just did the math on the number of pitchers selected for allstate.

17 selections for D1 this year - 10 pitchers
17 selections for D2 this year - 10 pitchers
18 selections for D3 this year - 11 pitchers
15 selections for D2 this year - 7 pitchers

67 selections for all divisions
38 pitchers chosen
57% pitchers

OHSFSCA voting just is not a true picture of the all the talented girls in the state. You have to take the list with a grain of salt.

Ump5761...sounds good....but those newspaper teams are heavily weighted toward the big schools and you very seldom if ever see D3 or D4 kids on them...so there are flaws in their process as well.

So good players don't play on bad teams...therefore are not deserving???

Got me there knight. In my neck of the woods, the local papers covers the teams extensively. I guess I should just count myself lucky.

The perfect world would be a metro type paper getting input from the local writers and then compiling the info from the coaches and the writers.

I guess I am searching for nirvana...

Another flaw with the Dispatch Metro team is that it only allows players from counties that touch Franklin county. So players from Marion, Morrow, who are in the Central District are not eligible for All-Metro. Caylor Arnold from Mt. Gilead has been a 1st team All-Ohioan the last two years but cannot be All-Metro. The Dispatch has no problem selling their papers up here!!

LK --you would just have to see it to appreciate it. Yes a couple good players can be on a bad team, but 4 players on a small d-4 school should equal being competitive. like I said , they were run ruled 5-6 times in conference and also took a 32-1 beating OOC .

Congrats to Ashley Hanes (1st team All State DII). Thats three years in a row that Greenville has pitcher win 1st team honors. Not sure Greenville has ever had a better hitting pitcher as Ashley spent most of the season around the .500 to .550 range with power.
