A question to Coaches-player stats & parent info

My dd has been playing travel for 4 years. During that time I have not kept any stats on her. IE: batting average, pitching stats etc.....but it would be really nice to have all this info.

Question to coaches:

Is there a data base anywhere online with stats on kids? If not, how useful would it be to have a website where you could research a player? What kind of information would be helpful in choosing a player?

In our local rec league each coach is required to rate players in skill and ability and coachability. This information is attached to the child for the next years recruiting session.

What if at the end of each travel season coaches gave all the stats on their players and it was entered into a large database that coaches could search when that kid shows up at their tryouts. Also, would it be helpful to have on that same database notes on parents (IE: flag the psychotic ones lol) Serious, this might keep some parents in line.

Let me know your thoughts on the pros and cons of this.

Might be a little unrealistic. If you've read this board for any length of time, everyone keeps stats differently and not all are equal. I think you would find very padded stats, which would be completely useless.

I do stats for my team and it is a pain in the butt!! I could not imagine having the time to do a data base for all the players in the state of Ohio. It'd be a nice scouting tool though ;)!!!

I agree with Klump........I also started keeping the stats, and enter them into our website. It is very time consuming. The other post was also right on, no 2 people keep stats the same. So from one person to another the real truth could be very misleading. Most coaches do keep info on players, you might want to talk to them and see if they still have any stats on your daughter and could get copies.

I have used Turbo Stats Proseries for 8 years and love it. The problem is it takes time to keep up on stats and as stated before, not everyone scores stats correctly or in the same manner. I might award a batter with a hard hit that went off the edge of a glove, where another coach might list it as a fielding error against the defense. It's very subjective at best.

In general stats provide coaches with a tool to determine who is achieving and who is under achieving. Sometimes it can be just a batting slump or it could be other issues.

However, I try to provide players with their stats at the end of the season. It is a huge need when you hit 16u to have the stats when putting together a college profile.

I'm sure parent stats and coaches stats vary quite a bit. I don't think opening that can of worms for everyone to see is such a good idea. DD's coach gives all the parents their dd's stats and just lets them know what the team high and low are of all categories. I really like this method as your dd can see how far off they are from being the best and God forbid the lowest. Great incentive to work harder if they are the lowest.

So totally agree with you. . .posting stats online and or providing the teams stats to the entire group can and has back fired on me in my younger years of coaching. It becomes a tool used by less than well meaning parents to pick on girls they want off the team or have personal issues with for what ever reason.

That's why I provide the individual stats to the players at the end of the season. I allows them to see an overall picture of where they started and where they went to.

I give out player stats at the end of the season, email parents and players the information. Give them both a game summary and year-end summary for reference. As an example given above, hard hit off the glove, would be an error or hit. Stats are subjective but we try to be as impartial as possible. If there is a questionable play, will ask other coaches to give the most representative stat.
