I know this topic has probably been beaten to death, but I searched and couldn't find anything. Probably wasn't searching for the right key words.

The rules are pretty clear on when a player can and cannot participate with her summer team (non- scholastic team) but what if her summer coach is her individual hitting, pitching, and or defensive coach. I see they added language that states that a player can received individual instruction as long as it doesn't violate school board/administrative policies or the ORC, but it is still unclear if the instructor is allowed to be her summer coach. The language in the rule book seems to suggest that the prohibition is from participation in an "organizational or team" event, but that's a little fuzzy.

Thoughts?

I also have another one as I type this. Do the contact time frame limitations for a school coach to coach his school players out of season apply to a situation where his only school player is his daughter? On a personal note, I think all school should have a policy of not allowing parent coaches, but that's a different discussion for another day.

Thanks!

Players can received individual instruction at anytime during the year, the coach being a summer travel ball coach would not be an issue. On the second question as long as there are four or fewer players from the same school there is no limitations as long as it is out of the school season. This how I have always read the regulations.

You bring up a great question. I too have had this question.
Nobody wants to contribute towards the potential violation of any school ball rules. Being an instructor myself, I feel safe as an instructor because I'm a paid instructor offering lessons at a public facility and those lessons are available to anybody. From my perspective, I don't see how this would be in violation of any rules. Now, if I was a school ball coach, and I was offering "lessons" to the entire team every Tuesday & Thursday from 6:00-8:00...I think that's a completely different story.
I have also heard that a player is always allowed to work with her parent. On the other hand, I also know that if that parent is a school coach, now you are crossing the lines because the school coach is only allowed X amount of contact days with the players during certain times (I think June through the end of July).

If any member has more clarify on this with some good examples, please share for the benefit of us all.

Situation #1. Abigail Plays for Coach Smith in the Summer. Coach Smith is the hitting coach at Get Better Hitting Facility and he gives her paid private hitting lessons on March 10th. Is this allowed?

Situation #2. Abigail & 3 of her SUMMER team players play for Coach Smith in the Summer. Coach Smith offers private instruction for those 4 players, who are all from different schools. These lessons take place March 10th. Allowed?

Situation #3. Abigail & 3 of her SCHOOL team players play for Coach Smith (high school coach). The coach is also an instructor at Get Better Hitting Facility. They take individual instructions (group of 4 or less in the building at one time) from the instructor. This happens at various times throughout the year. The rule is different at different times of the year, so let's separate them. On June 10th-OK? August 10th-OK? March 10th-OK? For simplicity's sake...if this small group EVER exceeds 4 (even in different parts of the building at the same time) this is NOT ALLOWED. THAT IS CLEAR!!!!

Situation #4. Abigail is the daughter of Coach Smith, the SCHOOL team coach, who is also the hitting instructor at Get Better Hitting. Coach Smith works one on one with Sally throughout the year. Is this allowed?

Would love some credible insight into these different situations. I think if somebody could answer these, a lot of questions would be answered state-wide.

I had a question. If there is a girl playing H.S. ball on jv, but has dressed for varsity games, but now the jv season is done can she participate with her travel team even though the varsity is still playing?

Will she "dress" for Varsity games during the tournament? Usually, the coach will determine who will "Dress" or be on the varsity roster for the tournament. Those that don't make the tournament roster are usually released. Those that are on the roster cannot participate with their travel team until the coach releases them, usually after they are eliminated from the tournament AND all regular season games have been completed.

Hope this helps.

You need to ask the coach and find out if he/she is planning on bringing her up for the tournament? If the coach does bring her up then she is NOT allowed to play with her travel ball team.

Ask the AD (Athletic Director) in your district. If you don't know who that is, call your superintendent's office and find out. Each individual district has their own special nuances and the AD would best understand and be able to apply the OHSAA rules to them. Plus, you can blame it on the AD if your child would accidentally violate the rules, based on your AD's advice. Good luck!
