So I was having lunch on Tuesday with father of Sophomore to be at a large high school in southwest Ohio when he told me of yet another asinine comment made by the varsity coach to the underclassmen: "Be sure to tell your travel ball coaches where to play you so you will be ready for high school ball next year". I can't make this stuff up; his bloated ego and audacity never cease to amaze me! Ahem, who do think is really doing the work to get these ladies to college??! It isn't you butthead.

Funny story especially given your opinion of the coach. The only thing I would say is that there may be a lot of high school coaches out there who might would say the same thing, but who also might actually be good high school coaches, and not all of their players are playing on top flight travel programs.

When I was assistant coaching in high school, we had one young lady on the team who played on a "B" level travel program at best (because she wanted/needed to stay local), and who her travel team used to play in the middle infield probably because she was their best player. But we knew that she not only would be able to help us more the next year in the outfield, but if she continued to improve and wanted to some day play in college, that her skill set would be much more suited to be an outfielder ... one of the reasons being that her foot speed was much better than her foot work ... and she seemed to appreciate that advice. I don't recall if she ended playing much OF for her travel team, but she did play a nice OF for us that next season. Due to her educational interests, she decided not to play softball in college, but she could have probably played OF at the D3 level, but there was no way she would have ever seen IF time.

Jeff - great perspective and it is apparent that you really care for the player and her future. If I truly felt this coach had players best interest in mind, the comment would not have registered with me at all. Like you I want to see all of these ladies reach their fullest potential (even while choosing education over athletics, which is the way it should b).

Is there a coach on here that isnt perfect?

I am not perfect. Far from it. I try to fix mistakes and learn something new at every turn. More importantly, I'll be the first to raise my hand and say I did it-------I'm responsible. Well, maybe second. I can think of a very close friend that would react to give himself up when a certain teacher asked "Who is responsible for this?" I never forgot and admire him to this day.

I made so many mistakes over the years, and know a lot of things I would do differently if I had a "do over"!

I don't know the coach the OP is referring to since I'm a long way from Ohio. However, I do know that HS Coaches are often lumped together as being incompetent or lazy or ... That simply isn't true. It also isn't true that HS Coaches don't get players recruited. Of the four seniors that graduated this year, all four are going to play in college and all four are doing so because I went to work to get them recruited. They will tell you that. I don't think I'm anything special and know others HS Coaches that do the same. So, again, one size does not fit all when it comes to HS Coaches and the HS Coach the OP referred to could be a real turd for all I know. JMHO
