I was the TD in the tournament where this took place and as an 18U coach, I asked one of my pitchers who was at the event if she was going to wear that thing now... She does in the summer but when I watched her in HS she wasn't, it just wasn't cool. But she assured me she was going to all summer.

Specificly I was very pleased #1 that the young lady was ok, in fact enough to have an outstanding sunday in the circle. 2, that she wasn't too proud to wear that thing. 3, that we had first responders on sight able to check her out quickly. 4, that her parents were responsible enough to go get her checked out further. Anything less could have been tragic. It is our jobs as the adults in this sport to do everything in our power to protect these ladies. I think NPF and NCAA should start mandating them if for no other reason, the trickle down effect. If Ricketts is wearing a mask on TV, Suzie will want to. Don't wait for a tragedy. We teach these kids to hit it too hard to field, lets protect them too.

Words cannot describe what it is like to witness your daughter taking a shot to the face. If your daughter decides to return to the circle after this has happened, watching her pitch again will never be as enjoyable as it was prior to the injury even with the mask on. She pitched her first year of college with the mask on and it was never an issue, not one person made fun of her. The former coach made it clear she did not approve of the mask, but said in your case I understand. Which really meant I wish you wouldn't wear it.

Do yourself a favor and make her wear it so you can enjoy every game she has left to play.

Have a slight correction to make to this....she didn't have an outstanding Sunday...she was STELLAR. I use the phrase "throwing darts"....when pitchers are really hitting spots it's like they are throwing darts at a dart board 3' away.
She was doing so well on Sunday that I could tell when there was a miscommunication on the pitch call, because the down & in fastball was supposed to have been a backdoor screw, for example. She was in FIYAAA.
And...the crew on site did an amazing job. I'm blessed in that I have a parent who is a nurse and she was the first medical professional to the field and her calm and demeanor was pretty inspiring. Being there in the circle with her, frightened myself was a scary moment, but when the nurse and subsequently the medics showed up, they went about their business just like it was that...business...with little emotion.
Back to the intent of the OP....WEAR THE FACEMASKS, LADIES.
I can say this...any pitcher who wants to pitch for my team will not play without one. Period. I won't even give the parents a choice in the matter. Not an option.
