Any advice regarding migraine headaches?

This has never happened to me before.

I'm sitting here at work, and suddenly I can't see clearly directly in my line of sight. Peripheral vision is fine. What can I do?

Getting old is a b*tch...

Migraines are usually hereditary, i dont think they come on with age. Check online for a list of foods that trigger them, (chocolate, caffeine, nitrates, hot dogs, processed meat, etc)
I get them occassionally (thanks mom) to the point of throwing up, best thing to do is take your favorite pain reliever, relax and if you can lay down or get out of bright light. A really hot shower is my last resort.

Thanks H23.

Strangely enough, the vision thing has disappeared with an hour. (A nice headache remains in it's wake, though...) I hope this is a one time occurrence. Fat chance, eh?

Don't tell my wife, or I'll be getting MRI's and Cat scans and rectal probes for the next six months.

Start drinking more water throughout the day. Two weeks ago, my daughter was told to drink 100 oz. a day, so I would say 64 oz a day for you since she has a medical issue, anyway, so she has been doing this and no headaches. Also, you might want to try Feverfew if the water doesn't help. Heard Feverfew works as well for migraines. And if that doesn't work, take your pain meds, with a cold wash cloth and go to bed--sleep too will get rid of it. Hope this helps.

See, that's the confusing part: I drink 3-4 glasses of water a day already. There's no migraine history in my family. And I've had the same high-stress job for years...

All I can do is ride it out with Capn and Coke, apparently.

Certain foods, stress and dehydration are some of the big causes. My DD started getting them at games. Once when she was behind the plate in a game. She said she was catching the ball moving her head around to see past the blurry spots. Between innings she told me and I had her tell the coach and get out of the game. She then puked her brains out and had that terrible headache. WE discovered her biggest trigger and a very common one is the nitrates in hit dogs and lunch meats. She would eat a hot dog between games and get a migraine. She is more sensitive right before her "friend" arrives. Hope that's not your case Louuuu. haha. They make OTC migraine pain pills which are a combination of aspirin, acetaminophen and some caffeine. They work great. Pop them at first sign. I get then from an empty stomach when I forget to eat for awhile. This DD can't blame me for hers as she is adopted but my biological daughter get them too. lol

Maybe its something more serious.. especially if you havent ever had them before and there is no history. Have you had your blood/sugar level checked? any diabetes in the family?

I get them but mine seems to be triggered more from allergy/sinus, my dd on the other hand gets them and hers are triggered from lack of water! She is 18 and still hasn't realized how much water her body needs. I swear she is part camel, because she needs way more water than the average person. So when she gets hers I make her drink water with the gatorade powder mixed in that is for extreme atheletes. It has extra electrolites and potassium in them. She is a catcher and she also drinks this all summer long playing travel. When she was younger she used to get headaches every weekend and since we found this she doesn't. It works great. Good luck with the headaches.

Good tip, thanks. I will get my DD on that Gatorade powder regiment.

if they arent a regular occurrence and it came on suddenly--you should definitely get it checked out, if i knew who your wife is, i would alert her to it. nothing to mess with friend, it could mean the difference to whether or not you see tomorrow.

hey Louuu, I know you may think 3-4 glasses of water is enough, but it's not. Think about it, if you're truly drinking 3-4 glasses a day, and let's say you think it's 8 oz. each,
which it may be less, but let's say you're doing the typical 8 oz., then that's really only 24-32 oz. That's not enough, just a thought if you get another migraine, to drink, drink, drink. My dd has not had one headache in the last two weeks due to me giving her a 24 oz. cup to fill at school so she knows how much she's actually drinking a day. Now, I'm sure this isn't for you, but I do want to "put it out there" for others to read and just be aware--if you have a migraine longer than a day, take it seriously, call your doctor or go to the ER. My husband's brother was only 48 years old and had one, drove himself to the ER at OSU and soon after he arrived, had a stroke. Praise God he survived, but is different now.

I had my head pounding for 4 days before my stubborn you know what told my wife...and as you eluded she made me go to the ER. It was different though, sharp pains in one side of my head all the way from front to back. My BP was out of control...like 175 or something like that over 102 or something over 100. cant remeember exactly but was approaching stroke level. Im as hard headed as they come trust me but I knew my body and something felt off....trust your feelings...it isnt worth bad things happening for pride!

If you haven't had them before you definitely should get it checked out. I have gotten them for years and my mom did too, so mine occur every often. I have found I can function using Excedrine Migraine Formula or Goody's Headache powder (you dont feel great but at least you can keep your eyes open). As I said, however, if you haven't gotten them before and there is no history you should get it checked out.

I would definitely get them checked Louuu. Even if there's nothing seriously wrong, the doctor would be able to help, because there are so many different things that work for different people! In my case, it's hormonal...don't think that's you!! I take Imitrex when they get too bad, or when I don't treat them in time. It doesn't work for everyone though. I've also done the Excedrin with caffeine before they get too bad. With this crazy weather it might be bad sinuses! Go get it checked. I don't think they'll schedule an MRI right away...unless your wife has an "in" at the doctor's office! Good luck and keep us posted!
