My DD is an 8th grade middle school pitcher who has been wearing the gameface mask since she started pitching at 9U. She insists that she is going to wear her mask next year in high school regardless of whether any other players wear them. Just wondered, are there any high school players wearing masks this year?

My dd has no choice when playing infield, wear it or don't play. I have seen more girls wearing them this year then last.

Mine pitches and has no choice either. But she has to have it now. Has been wearing it for 6 years and feels uncomfortable without it. Had a game face forever, but just got a Rip It mask. The vision field is better than the game face.

Our 3B does and I think there should be a rule in place when our leadoff gets up that the left side needs to as she can put the hurt on someone. I'm being totally serious with that as I cringe everytime she's up of what can happen....

I have not seen very many girls wearing a mask at all in fact I can't remember more than one or two. My daughter has always worn one but she has chosen not to in HS- no one on team does. Not happy about it but I will not force her to. Now in the summer that is a different story as she will wear one as most of my team does.

My daughter pitches and plays infield and she also has no choice but to wear one if she wants to play those positions. Almost all the teams we have played the 3rd, 1st and pitcher have them on.

I've seen a lot in HS. A handful in college. (D3 and NAIA)

What's the difference between HS and summer ball as far as wearing a mask? Aside from she may face some pretty mature 18 yr olds in HS she wouldn't see in summer ball at 14U or 16U?

Yes I know, stupid peer pressure. kids.....

OP, I was wondering if your DD was wearing one this year since I know she wore it all the time last year. Britt insists she's going to wear her mask next year as she feels uncomfortable without it, so we'll see...

Our area is about 25-35% wearing masks on the corners and the % of pitchers is probably lower---around 20%. Our area varsity teams appear to be fielding older pitchers so I'm assuming that's why that number is lower. It is more popular with the freshmen and sophomore age groups and I haven't heard or seen any peer pressure. Honestly, the girls in our area seem to accept it more and it doesn't appear to be an issue.

I have always made it a point to inform parents and players of any safety equipment available. I've been known to carry equipment---masks---in my vehicle during the summer just in case somebody wanted it. I've never told a girl to take any safety equipment off, but I still feel it should be a family decision if a player wears any of it. If mom says it's a rule in her house, I will respect that and be on guard to tell her daughter to get it on. However, I do not believe it should be a sanctioning rule. This should be a personal choice.

My DD broke a girls nose last year and was inches from taking a third basements head off this season. I know it effects the players that get hit but it also effects those that are at bat. last year it took a while for her to get over it. Please be safe!

My DD wears one in travel ball and HS ball. She is the starting varsity pitcher. The Rip it is a lot better than the Gameface.

A few years ago we had a travel ball pitcher on our team take a hard shot to the face and suffer a slight fracture. Once you have seen that happen, you will not question whether or not to wear one.

DD tried not wearing hers last year because of a little peer pressure and assistant coach made a comment. I solved that real fast, strolled by head coaches dad who was an assistant. I politely said," you are about to lose a second basemen". He looked at me and asked me what I was talking about. I said," no mask no play." He responded with I cant raise them. I responded with," Yep, but I sure can pull her off the field." Needless to say, she wore the mask for the rest of the year. Really don't understand the thinking behind letting them not wear it for school ball but they wear it for travel ball.

What's nice for parents of pitchers at our High School is that at this time the Varsity pitcher, JV pitcher both wear the masks and that sets the example for the younger kids that it's okay and I'm seeing pretty good compliance (probably 80%) on younger pitchers coming up. Seems like word is out that if you don't wear a mask you must not be very serious about pitching. I don't think that is necessarily a true statement, but if peer pressure is getting these kids to protect themselves, I'm not arguing. We also have a varsity infielder wearing one for the first time.

Seen lots of girls wearing them through 7 HS games. DD plays 3rd and she prefers protecting her face over the alternative of what she has seen happen.

I think one of the reasons you see it more in summer ball is because maybe no pressure from older girls and some orgs its mandatory on the corners and pitching, cause lets face it the talent is better so the odds of gettin one hit your way go up.

I was at the OWU game on Wednesday and there pitcher had a mask on.
I know Buckeye Valley Varsity starting 3rd base wares one.
All BV middle school 1st, 3rd and pitch are required to have one on.
This is a good thing to get them use to it early and then there is no problem later on with them wearing one in HS.

+1 ... Good post; parental decision.

Through 9 games in central Oh I have only seen 1 girl wear a mask - one of my players when she pitches or plays first. I also cringe when my #4 hitter comes up and 3rd is not wearing a mask.
