Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Any High School players wearing masks this year?

My DD starting wearing one this year. She is a (young) Freshman and made Varsity and she starts either at 3rd or pitcher. She has never worn one before but this year she realized that most of the girls she would face are going to be Jr's and Sr's - so far, many of the girls we've seen are twice her size! This gave her a sense of security and she plays tougher at 3rd because of it.

Something else I've noticed this year - the hits are a lot harder and bigger - my theory is the 43'. Anyone else think this? I've seen lots of HR and triples every game!!!

DD is a Freshman playing first on varsity and she wears it; I did not even have to mention it.

My Freshman DD starting Varsity Pitcher . She is the only girl that wears a mask on the team. I dont have to tell her she knows from travel ball it only takes 1 swing of the bat.

My DD wears one. 2 years ago we saw a 2nd baseman take one to the face in travel ball. It was a horrible sight and the sound is something I won't forget. She already wore one, but definately would have been after that. And that was 12U. She wears it for travel and she as a freshman, playing varsity she wears it, no matter what infield position! I've noticed several girls wearing them. I think they started being worn more just within the last 2-3 years. I think eventually you'll see more and more girls wearing them. I don't understand coaches not supporting them. Our coach is fine with them. To me that will give the girls a feeling of security & make them better players.

My daughter is a Freshman playing varsity and when she plays in the infield (she has been starting at 2nd base) then she wears hers. The other freshman on our varsity plays 3rd and she also wears one (after her dad realized she was trying not to wear it at the first game, he put a stop to that). Lastly, our pitcher (who has a full-ride scholarship to a DII school) wears one too. Its definitely good to see so many more girls wearing them; it just is only logical if you have ever seen a girl take a ball to the face.

Travel players wear masks in our area, rest of no idea about them, but parents are asking about them now.

My DD wore her mask tonight for the first time this season and while she was taking warm up rolls between innings one of the balls took a hard hop and hit her in the shoulder, one of the seniors sarcastically says good thing you have that mask on HA HA! I'm ok with this and I'm hoping she has the self confidence to take it in stride and keep wearing it! 3RD base , 1st, and pitcher are danger zones in my opinion. I've seen alot of shots this season that have been real close to face smahers! I think she has built up enough confidence from her teammates to look past the razzing, I hope!:)

At a freshman game today, I overheard a parent of a rec player point out my travel girls who had masks on as the girls who had bad reflexes and were too slow catch a bad hop! Ahhhhh...ignorance is bliss and she is full of both.

My sophomore dd pitcher will always wear a mask in travel ball after what we saw last year during our first year in travel ball. Brutal line drives. Not many HS pitchers are wearing them this year in our area and she doesnt want to anymore. She is still wearing it though. After what I saw you better wear one if you are a pitcher, especially in travel ball.

im a freshman on varsity and play 2nd base, and i dont wear one. but if i was playin a corner position like 1st or 3rd, i would most deffinetly put one on! i would rather look a little funky just for a game, than to look funky for the rest of my life with my face being messed up by a mass hit.

Why aren't you wearing it for school ball? You wore it for travel while playing 2nd last year. Don't want to see you hurt! Most of our school team doesn't wear them other than the freshman. Our head coach did tell the pitcher who's a jr that she needed to start wearing one.

Why? I don't get it? They wear batting helmets and other protective gear. Do they want the girls to play like the boys? Trying to "legitimize" the sport at the sake of our daughters? Do they want them to look all pretty out there on the mound or at 3rd with no protective gear?

I guess I just don't understand the seemingly unspoken opposition to protective face gear. Does it some how limit their ability as a pitcher or infielder?

I find that a little hard to believe, but if she did in fact say that, I'd be very disappointed in her.

Then outlaw composite bats and make them hit the ball with a real bat. OK I said it. My dd is a pitcher though.

Alabama players couldn't even manage sunglasses for a while in that game with the Gators, let alone masks. :D

On a more serious note, not one player in this game wore an infielder's mask on defense. If in fact the elite Division 1 programs won't recruit infielders who wear masks, then travel ball coaches who have legit candidates for those elite programs face a really tough choice with respect to recommending whether the player lose the mask. Hopefully the attitude among elite Division 1 programs will change soon. In the meantime, parents of TB players have the final say on the issue of masks in TB and unless the TB player really is a D1 candidate, I would as a parent require the mask, something I foolishly didn't do with our P/1B DD who loved playing in and crashing on the corner. As I've said before, we dodged the bullet on that one.

I keep hearing this comment and I have talked to more than my share of college coaches and have yet to find one that backs that comment. Plus I have worked with Finch and don't recall her making those comments at our camps. cgs and I know a kid that wears one and it didn't stop one of the top D1's in the country from looking at her! Note Florida- Alambama game that the batting helments now have a mask. College's didn't wear them in the past. They game is changing due to the speed and bats. Perhaps the girl playing third needed one, so she won't pull her head out.
